I would agree, but Pickles the Drummer exists and the trans headcanon fans for him are nothing short of feral.

The ones I have seen being more rabid were HCs from Nie Huaisang from MDSZ. He doesn't want to fight, something common from his clan, but loves to do stuff that other clans can do (art, reading and have a dandy lifestyle) without problems? Totally a trans man!

The amount of psychic damage I take every time I see "this character has feminine traits, they must be a secret woman trans man!" is enormous.

(Anonymous) 2024-01-25 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
AYRT: And is not even "feminine traits" at all. The Lan clan had calligraphy and art classes too that men would learn too, and is not Huaisang's fault that he was born in the Nie clan. Hell, even women in the Nie clan could fight.

One of my fandoms has popular trans headcanon because this character is... soft-spoken.
And it's one of those fandoms that does not always tag for it. Argh

The amount of psychic damage I take every time I see an assumption that the reason for a character being headcanoned as trans is "they have a trait I (the one making the assumption) associate with a gender!" is enormous.

(Anonymous) 2024-01-25 07:10 am (UTC)(link)
If that isn't the reason, then why haven't I ever seen a traditionally feminine girl headcanoned as being a trans girl or a traditionally masculine man headcanoned as being a trans man?

That drives me nuts cause it's a fundamental misunderstanding of what constitutes manliness. Nie Huaisang is a common type of manly for that culture and time. It was part of the specifically gentlemanly skills to be well groomed and dressed, know music, be artistic, have good calligraphy, etc. But he's always the one being trans or NB in fic because he's tiny and passive in comparison to his brother, which is a very western reading and also I think reveals a lot of the inherent biases of these authors when it comes to trans and nb people. I'll be interested when it's Nie Mingjue who is trans.

(Anonymous) 2024-01-25 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
I was gonna say, a lot of the really bad headcanons I've seen in this fandom have come from western fans who 1. don't know anything about the culture these costume dramas are pulling from(with some TV show embellishment for sure) and 2. have never seen another Chinese(or even Korean) show ever in their lives and are just slapping western social norms onto these shows and calling it a day. It's... at my most generous just incredibly odd and at my least generous: low-key racist because they don't even try to understand how another culture's media narratives work.

AYRT: And is interesting because in "The Fatal Journey" movie it was shown that both MingJue and Huaisang complimented each other in the clan: MingJue had the force but Huaisang was quite intelligent and manipulative when he want to be (as we could see in the ending). Leaving him like a fragile and baby trans or NB shows they didn't understand nothing about Huaisang: He didn't want to fight not only because he was a brat at first, but because he knew the dangers of using a sable in the Nie Clan, so he liked a quiet life than having a Qi deviation like his ancestors and even his older brother had.

All of my money for trans!Nie Mingjue fic ngl. I would 100% love to read that.

(Anonymous) 2024-01-25 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
I mean... it's got nothing to do with trans headcanons, if you try to tell me a male calico cat is cis, I'm going to think you're a moron. He might have an extra X chromosome while bearing external male genitalia, I'm not saying he can't be intersex, but like...
I know what a calico cat is, bro. 'Male' calico cats are intersex.

(Anonymous) 2024-01-25 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
Or chimeras.

(Anonymous) 2024-01-25 06:22 am (UTC)(link)
around half of all chimeras are technically intersex. (xx + xy)

I mean people who insist their headcanons are canon are irritating no matter what they're headcanoning. So yeah people insisting their trans headcanons are canon will be annoying in the same way that people insisting their headcanon of a loud, brash, non-nonsense character as being an uwu widdle baby with anxietyyyyyyyyy is canon.

It's not more or less annoying when people do this for trans headcanons than any other that's gotten obnoxiously insistent in a fandom.

(Anonymous) 2024-01-26 01:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree mostly but disagreeing with trans headcanons these days will get you labelled a TERF and could invite death threats and no-one needs that.

(Anonymous) 2024-01-25 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
Idc what people headcanon but it's kinda funny that a fandom that thinks neon rainbow sharkdogs are cool and normal is like "male calico? impossible"

(Anonymous) 2024-01-25 04:54 am (UTC)(link)

wait til they see my fursona (she is a trans girl calico) (i literally don't care if it's biologically improbable i made her up)

(Anonymous) 2024-01-25 07:44 am (UTC)(link)
a dog that talks is equally improbable, weird that people give a shit

(Anonymous) 2024-01-25 07:02 am (UTC)(link)
Well, according to most of this community a male calico should neither be headcanoned as a trans male nor a trans female (who's still an egg). The former is stereotyping because male calicos who are born male exist even if they're uncommon and to say they all must have been born female is gender essentialist. The latter is stereotyping because male calicos who are born male exist even if they're uncommon and to say they all must be female on the inside because of their markings is gender essentialist. Add of all fucking things, "tricolored anthropomorphic cat" to the long list of traits that can only ever belong to cis characters because cis people not wanting trans headcan-- er, I mean, cis people being concerned about gender stereotyping holds more weight than trans people relating to characters through headcanons.

(Anonymous) 2024-01-25 07:43 am (UTC)(link)
happy for you or sorry that happened

(Anonymous) 2024-01-25 12:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Lol right? At least use some proper spacing and/or punctuation if you want people to read you drivel.

Like, of course trans guys are allowed to relate to characters and have trans headcanons. but with all due respect, this does not explain the entirety phenomenon observed. Trans men are people: they have different likes, interests, ideals, physical characteristics, personality traits - they're not all going to relate to exactly the same character. They're not all gnc/conventionally feminine, they're not soft spoken, or passive, or pretty, or even short (my trans guy cousin is 6'2").

But do you know who is going to pick the tiny, pretty, passive, soft-spoken, conventionally feminine character with conventionally feminine interests, always and every time? People who don't really respect the gender of trans dudes, people who think they're just Better Ukes or Might As Well Be Women for porn.

It's not like it's hard to tell the difference - in my last fandom, there were three guys regularly headcanoned as trans. Only one was shy/passive/short (and even he had conventionally masculine interests), another was characterized in a way that is more common female characters (but was tall! and good at fighting!), another was outgoing and aggressively sexual. And it was pretty obvious why when you got to know the people in the fandom - they're actual trans guys relating to these characters. And sometimes, albeit more rarely you would even see the very, very masc dudes with trans headcanons. But when it's always the same guy, and never the other guys.... yeaaaaaaah that's not what's going on there.

(Anonymous) 2024-01-26 05:00 am (UTC)(link)
1000% this. In my fandom it's always, always the pretty, long-haired, somewhat effeminate, gentle man who gets headcanoned as trans. Never the MC, never the very masc former military guy, never the MC's strict, no-nonsense brother. There's absolutely no reason any of them couldn't be trans! But no, everyone zeros right in on the soft, pretty one.
