Media with sequels that should have stayed a standalone

(Anonymous) 2024-01-24 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
What are some movies/novels/podcast episodes etc. that started out as standalones but later got sequels/got turned into a series that in your opinion would have been better off staying standalones?

I think The Matrix worked perfectly well as a self contained standalone movie and didn't need any sequels at all.

Hard agree.

One that's been said many times before: The Hobbit should have only been one movie, maybe 2 at a stretch, but three was overkill and the series ended up being very disappointing. And I was even willing to see how things went, but I wish they'd been able to keep it at one.

Jurassic Park. I know the movies are money makers, but the Jurassic Park sequels were pretty bad and Jurassic World is a shitshow.

ALW's Phantom of the Opera musical has no sequel. I don't know what you're talking about.

No sequel yet, but there is supposed to be one. And Edge of Tomorrow should remain a standalone forever. It is such a great movie, but having a sequel will ruin it.

I agree with the person who said the Matrix. none of the sequels work particularly well.

I've also heard they are planning a Galaxy Quest Sequel. And What? No. Another movie perfect as it is that would be ruined by a sequel.

The first Wreck-It Ralph movie is a rainy day, comfort movie for me. I quit watching the sequel about 45 minutes in.

I'm also amazed at how hard DC whiffed the Wonder Woman series - the first movie wasn't perfect, but I loved it and it seemed like the flaws would have been easy to improve on. Wonder Woman 1984 was dogshit. So on one hand, I wish the sequel never happened. But also, from the opposite standpoint... it's freakin' Wonder Woman. How do you not at least milk a trilogy out of that??

(I remembered Shazam 2 and Aquaman 2 and thought maybe I should say "all DCEU sequels," but then I remembered "The Suicide Squad," which I haven't seen yet but I know a lot of people enjoyed.)

Mortal Kombat. That sequel in the 90s bored me almost to sleep in the theatre.

Squid Game doesn't need a season 2 - and it sure didn't need a tie-in reality show!

A bunch of Disney movies didn’t need sequels.

Going a bit more niche with this.

Novel:
Havemercy. I was in this fandom ages ago, back in the days of livejournal, and it was a smaller but very active fandom. I loved the book, despite being fully aware that it was not really super great and read more like a serial-numbers-filed-off fanfic of a fandom I didn't know but the first novel was fun and the fandom was as well. Then followed three more novels and they... just weren't very good either but also lacked the charm of the first one. So, meh.

Podcast:
There were several stories on the NoSleep podcast that started out as a one-off story and that I kinda liked but then got sequels/turned into a series of stories that I really couldn't stand. I really loved Soft White Damn (the voice acting was great) but the sequels turned it from genuinely creepy to tedious. And while I didn't totally love the "Summer" vampire story, I liked it well enough but it was an annoying snoozefest the longer the sequels dragged on.

How To Train Your Dragon (the movie/TV show 'verse).

The first holiday special short ("Gift of the Night Fury") can stay, it has the Vibes of the original movie. The rest of the franchise just... ugh. The second movie could have been ok if the third had gone into a different direction, but instead the third retroactively ruined the second one too, by making some previously minor issues into Feature Not A Bug, and therefore emphasizing their badness.
The spinoff TV shows just plain didn't understand *why* the original movie had been good.

Not really a standalone but Soukyuu no Fafner should have stopped after the Heaven & Earth movie.

(Everything that comes after the movie doesn't exist for me and thus I can still say that it's one of my most favorite anime of all time.)

Small accomplishments

[personal profile] philstar22 2024-01-25 03:14 am (UTC)(link)
What little things have you accomplished so far this year?

I actually went to the gym today and got in the pool and swam some laps. Proud of myself. Haven't been in months due to various reasons (knee pain from car accident and my mental health mostly). And I've been wanting to, but haven't been able to give myself the push. But I did today. And it felt so good. Couldn't do as many laps as I would have liked to, but it is a start.

I am hunting for job anon. And I am so proud of myself. I've only been doing active search for a couple of weeks now and it's been... okay? I had some interviews and I am doing tests and sending sending sending resume. One of job interviews was extremely unsuccessful, when you understand half way that it's not it. But I was sad and a bit self-deprecating like for 15 minutes. For a person with awful anxiety, lowest of low energy and low self-esteem I am doing ✨great✨
Sorry for a long rumble but I am trying not to be too much for people I know because everyone search for job and I know people with much cooler jobs than me.

A friend came and helped me unpack a dozen or so boxes in a room, which have not been touched since I moved house five years ago.

Ok, so I have chronic fatigue syndrome, and in that time my mother has broken her leg twice, I've had shingles, I've had to deal with Robodebt while the megafires were raging, and there's been a worldwide pandemic. So I've had excuses for not doing it.

But it's great, though slightly weird, to have them unpacked and at least half of the books sent off to charity book sales. Thank-you to my friend, you're a star!

I think I've finally (mostly) gotten over my fear of the telephone (look, anxiety is weird). I have steadily gotten better at it, but I was still always very nervous just dialing the numbers. I'm not anymore?
I feel like, even though it sucks pretty badly, working in retail truly is the best therapy for anxiety (related because it's usually work that makes me grab the phone because I want to talk to an actual human that can give me answers asap).
