Huh, TIL. I remember I used to see the buckets on the trees as a kid, they were right at eye level from my school bus window. I guess cultural osmosis just changed the background of that from spring to fall.

Yep! The sap runs in the spring, when the trees are waking up after winter. It's not worthwhile (or nice to the trees) to tap in the autumn, when they're cozying up for winter.
