Re: I hate this state so much

I definitely think we can strive to give people basic rights and dignity, but I'm not sure how feasible that is. Even when we're trying, the best we seem to be able to do is to house them in tents and bunkers with awful conditions. If that's not an indication that we lack the resources to handle the situation, I'm not sure what else is.

I think what I would like to see is more focus on undoing the disastrous effects of our foreign policy (in the case of our southern border, our treatment of Latin America specifically) so that people are less likely to feel as though they need to flee their homes. This is a problem of our own making. It's a downstream effect of us acting as if we have the right to interfere in their countries in order to "secure" and enrich our own, and that's what makes me angriest about it all. Of course, fixing that is a long way off, and I understand that. But I also think the immediate issues are more complicated than we're willing to admit.

You aren't wrong. It is complicated. And again, I do think there will have to be compromises on both sides. But nothing justifies what Texas is doing right now. What they are doing is evil.

I don't agree with Texas' policy, either. I came in provocatively (and in retrospect I probably shouldn't have), but I think we're probably in accord on this issue overall. I'm mostly just frustrated by how simplified it all gets in the general conversation.
