The secret doesn't say there wasn't any craziness back then, though. It just says that the larger a community is, the more crazies there are. Which is absolutely true. As for not being much smaller... eh, I guess that's a matter of opinion. I think the addition of social media blowing up big time makes a significant difference in terms of traffic, viral spreading of whatever, bringing in mainstream audiences, and direct contact with creators, actors, etc. We did not have that to such a degree 20-30 years ago.

The secret also doesn't say there weren't any big fandoms at all. But even a big fandom with the addition of mainstream attention and big corporations... that's not small potatoes.
