That is broadly what happened in TFA, to be fair. They performed a devastating terrorist attack. It was the bext movie which decided they'd destroyed it.

That's absolutely how it's presented in TFA but w/e, the important thing is that everything bad that has ever happened in Star Wars is TLJ's fault

I mean pretty much anything would have been better than the sequel trilogy rehashing the OT beat-for-beat (only worse) but I do like your idea: it's one thing to be the plucky underdog to someone else's evil, where you feel that might-makes-right because the other guy is "bigger" than you, but how do you maintain peace when you have power and the opposing side sees themselves as the plucky underdog to what they think is your evil?

Or would that hit too close to home for the audience lmao

A lot of people don't want to think about the potential for the oppressed to become the oppressors.

I know many people don't particularly like that kind of story because it could be construed as critical of the oppressed and it can be handled very poorly, but like, having a quick glance at world events here now, it sure feels topical.

Have you ever seen Blake's 7? It is ancient and the effects are terrible, but it does a good job of getting the audience to see the changes in the plucky rebels.

(Anonymous) 2024-01-31 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
I have, and you seem to forget that most of the plucky rebels were never particularly good people to begin with.

I don't think it needed to have any one specific setup. They could have gone any which way in how they wanted to do the worldbuilding and made it work.

The problem was that they mostly didn't really do the worldbuilding part. They just sort of waved their hands in the air and said "it's the original trilogy again". And I'm not a worldbuilding fanatic by any stretch, I'm not asking for a wealth of detail. But they didn't ever sketch out what the situation was and - most crucially - how it impacted the different characters. We as the viewers needed to have a sense of what factions existed, how they related to each other, how the characters related to the different factions, and why that mattered to the characters. We just didn't get that.

So much this.

so instead of redoing the originals, you wanted them to redo the prequel trilogy from a different perspective.

Well no because during the prequels the Republic is not just in power, it is ancient (and corrupt) - I think anon wants to see how the New Republic would avoid the pitfalls of the Old and create something better in the face of adversity, which is a completely different story.

the core dynamics of power are similar enough, especially since the new republic would not in fact suddenly have less corruption and probably has more considering, that i don't think it would make a real difference.
