Javert is likely a literal bastard in the sense that his parents were likely not married to each other:

This secret coming right after the POTO one from yesterday is awakening my inner musical theater nerd.

Javert is an illustration of why acab. As an individual he has good qualities that you would want in a police officer, he's honest, he's incorruptible, when he thinks he's falsely accused the mayor of being Jean Valjean from a personal motive he confesses and asks to be removed from his post. He's a by-the book cop, and the book is part of the problem. Before he jumps into the river he writes a letter detailing all of the abuses and hypocrisies he's noticed in the police and prison systems, and when his superiors read it they just say whelp, that guy must have been crazy.

But also, like, is he a character where I'm like "what if he didn't nope out of life after his ACAB realization and instead had an Arc(tm)"? Yes.

I had to look up what ACAB meant.
I'm personally tired of everyone hating on every cop they see, rather than the more difficult task of fixing a flawed and yes racist system.
Here's an experiment for people who hate every cop they see. We'll get rid of police altogether. Then, when someone breaks into your house what are you going to do? Oh yes and no police will mean no court system. No one ever gets arrested.
(Yes to Black Lives Matter. But the "EVERY COP IS A PIG!" people are as tiresome as the "all cops are fantastic and the system isn't flawed at all" crowd.)

The first time I saw ACAB in a secret, I wasn't up on the lingo. I thought it was "Assigned Cop at Birth."

I know now I was wrong, but that still amuses me.
