I think it's cause the window of success for fics like that is so narrow that for the most part, it fails miserably.

It's either really really good, or really bad. No in between.

Hah I suppose it could be one of those things that's like doing a flip: you either can or you can't there's no in-between. And one is impressive and the other is a face-plant.
