You're not an anti.

normal fan: I prefer reading this, so I'm not going to read that.

anti: I prefer reading this, so you can't read that.

Thanks, nonny, you just reminded me I still need to modify that religion meme!

(Anonymous) 2024-02-07 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
make all the memes!

(Anonymous) 2024-02-07 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
I don’t think that makes you an anti. I love me some shipfic, but sometimes I’m in the mood for gen and don’t wanna read any shipping stuff.

I don't think that makes you an anti. Having a preference in fandom doesn't make someone an anti.

While I enjoy shipping, I'm in a fandom right now where that's probably like. One of the least interesting things going on tbh. And I do have ships and I will talk about them, but a lot of what I'm personally creating is gen stuff.

(Anonymous) 2024-02-07 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
An anti is someone who thought-polices what people should be allowed to read/ship/imagine and what makes you worse than a criminal for imagining it.

Also people do still write non-shippy fics now, but of course that entirely depends on what fandom you're in and how popular the shipping is IN said fandom (For instance, with Undertale there were shipping - but I mostly read the family/found-family and mental health focused fanfics).

I think being an anti takes action

(Anonymous) 2024-02-07 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
Sounds like you just have a preference. Being an anti would mean you were going around spouting at everyone that they shouldn't like or participate in it because you don't like it so everyone should not like it.

(Anonymous) 2024-02-07 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
What fandoms are you in because I would KILL for more shippy fic in mine, there's hardly any

(Anonymous) 2024-02-07 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
??? Who has ever said that preferring genfic makes you an anti? Genuinely do not understand where this is coming from. Are we just using anti to mean "person in fandom I don't like" now?

(Anonymous) 2024-02-07 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think that opinion makes you an anti as long as you don't spend all of your time in fandom going up to shippers/into ship tags shitting all over them.

Playing the victim and whining "woe is me, I'm sure this totally normal opinion will make people call me an anti" even though nobody actually does that is something antis just LOVE doing though. Usually as a smokescreen to a) distract from their actual anti behaviour and b) to make non-antis seem unreasonable.

(Anonymous) 2024-02-07 02:20 am (UTC)(link)
Yeahh, don't wanna accuse them of anything, but I'm kinda wondering if OP is being entirely honest about why they're supposedly being called an anti. I have never seen someone say that just because a person prefers older fic. I CAN imagine someone saying that to a person who is loudly complaining about shipping ruining modern fandom or whatever.

(Anonymous) 2024-02-07 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
Why do you have to ship them when they're clearly just Good Friends? Sex-obsessed modern society, practically incest, etc.

(Anonymous) 2024-02-07 08:30 am (UTC)(link)
FEtiShIZinG!

(Anonymous) 2024-02-07 10:41 am (UTC)(link)
Did you just get triggered by something you imagined yourself, and then accuse someone else of doing it? Because you absolutely did. You need to take some time out of fandom to work on yourself and why you are making up things to get angry at others over. Have you tried being in Republican politics instead? You'd fit in better over there. You can still ship Trump/De Santis if you like though. Put 'em in drag, too. Furry drag.

(Anonymous) 2024-02-07 12:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Did you mean to malign drag artists in your off-the-wall accusatory flame? Because you sure did! Going to accuse someone of grooming on the way to your next book-burning, Adolph?

(Anonymous) 2024-02-07 02:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Now you're just embarrassing yourself.

(Anonymous) 2024-02-07 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
So does this mean that you're a Republican yourself?

(Anonymous) 2024-02-07 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
Shipping is fun, a lot of fun, but I love me some non-ship fics. Personally, Love the ones that use OCs as a mean to explore other part of the grand universe of the canon, seeing what other fans think may be going on or another perspective.

(Anonymous) 2024-02-07 04:41 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I agree with the other comments here. Anti in the current common use means someone who is actively involved in anti-shipping, and in the more general past use still refers to being, well, outspokenly a hater of whatever you're an "anti" of, whether it's a character, a pairing or something else. So while it's certainly possible to be against romance fic in general to the point that you make a fuss about it and harass the shippers in the fandom, simply preferring gen fic is not what I would consider being an anti.

(Anonymous) 2024-02-07 07:33 am (UTC)(link)
Mate, you're not an anti, and the shipping vs gen war has been going on for decades now. You are just joining a long and hallowed tradition of gen fans salty that the majority of fandom caters to shippers because that's more popular than gen

Henry Cavil gets it.

I seriously question if your perceived pattern holds true. I feel like shipping is the first thing out the gate and only later do people do the longer, plottier, character driven gen stuff.

And that makes it hard to take you seriously. But hey, you do you! And you've got filtering tools on AO3 to help! This is the future!
