I have a feeling some people are misunderstanding the secret. Fandom is a place people go to to get away from the shit that's happening in their lives or in the real world, so it's perfectly acceptable to be annoyed by people dragging in these very loaded subjects into these spaces. We've seen enough pictures of dead children on our feeds all day, thanks, so we need a little time to breathe and relax as well. It's not even a "I don't care" thing, it's a "talking obsessively about this can drive anyone mad" or, what's frankly a lot worse, overexposure can have people stop caring about a situation that they must care about.

So yeah, it would be appreciated if these sorts of issues were kept at the door. We can go back to them after half an hour reading our favourite fluffy fic (or whatever rows your boat) to recharge our energies, you know.

I can't say for sure that overexposure has made me not care, because I can't pin down what did it. But I do not care. I feel nothing anymore when I see news about anything I should care about. I donate what I can, because it's the right thing to do, and intellectually I know I would have cared, but I feel no emotions about it. It's better than the other extreme, but I also know that this is not good.

I'm sorry about that, anon. It might not be overexposure per se, or maybe not to this specific subject, just the fact that we live in a time when everything can be overwhelming -- so much information all the time about so many different things (and people yelling at us because we didn't see A while we were reading about B or whatever) can really suck the life out of us, I think.

You'll probably get to a point where you can feel again eventually, but it sure won't be from just doing things that you're expected to do or from pretending to care about anything. It sounds like you need a good break and I'm hoping at least you still find joy in the things that do bring you pleasure.

i believe this is called emotional exhaustion. you've reached a point where you're too stressed out to deal anymore. totally understandable.

I'm from a country that had tons of riots on '19 and what you're saying is exactly what that anon is feeling. In my case I couldn't even share a cute meme because people would call me "selfish" for not "caring about my country's problems, nor sharing the news in my private Twitter" when I just wanted an escape for something I was living into. And, sad thing is, foreigners didn't even care because "that's so common in [anon country]", when many people suffered police violence and many others lose their eyes for the rubber bullet.

So I get why many anons feel emotional exhaustion and want the fandom the most apolitical as possible.

I get it. I'm in that state myself from things going on in my personal RL (deaths in the family, someone having major surgery, etc.) and I have to prioritize what I spend my emotional energy on. I can't do anything about the news, but I can help and support my family members and friends who are dealing with difficult things right now.

Empathy fatigue is real.

(Anonymous) 2024-02-11 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
This, honestly.

(Anonymous) 2024-02-11 04:53 am (UTC)(link)
Yup, same.
I've stopped caring about at all. Just emptiness.I am powerless and A LOT of shitty news are things that happening to me and mine.
