I'm confused... A trad publisher published a fanfiction as a fanfiction?

No, they're going the Fifty Shades route. Changing the names and fudging the worldbuilding, so it goes from "fanfiction" to "really derivative original fiction."

If the fic version gets pulled from AO3, it'll probably be because the publishing company demanded it in the contract, not because of anything to do with bootlegs getting sold on Etsy.

Yeah I don't think AO3 has any rule that would forbid a fic from being sold off-site, they just don't want to platform that kinda thing personally.

I'm really enjoying this fic, secret poster!

I'm not in that fandom at all, but it's well-written. I did download it in case it disappears while I'm in the middle of it haha.

I don't read HP fanfics but I would imagine even if this writer becomes a full time trad published author they're either going to create a new pseud/post anon if/when they continue to write fanfics. Based off what I've observed with public figures talking about their own fan fiction writing pre and post "fame"/becoming a public figure.

I’m still very curious about your bookbinding communities, OP. Fan fic rarely pops up in any of the circles I’ve been in for the last 12 years and never HP. HP fans are generally side eyed because of the whole “they should have read another book by now” thing and I kinda wonder if maybe they just keep a low profile, but that’s the exact opposite of how HP fans act; they’re notoriously OTT and think anyone who liked the books or movies has crafted their whole lives around them.

Fanfic is more and more mainstream. There's books with protags being fic wrighters. Not an OP but I personally bought a book about Snape in a fandom comicon in Russia in 2016 or about that time. It's a thick book with nice quality paper with a fanart on the cover.

I also absolutelly love Chinese books on Chinese and Korean tv series. They just sell books with quotes and screenshots in the book shops there. I own a few though I can't read Chinese.

It probably depends where you look: for example, if you look throught #bookbiding, #fanficbinding on instagram and tiktok, you will find Harry Potter fans but it's less likely if you do that on tumblr.

Ah that makes sense! For some reason I always forget Insta and TT as spaces for hobbies. The circles I’m in are all on places like Reddit, Discord, and a little on FB. We get newbies all the time so I think I default to assuming those are the main places.

I mean... if it gets pulled from AO3 and I *really* wanted to read it I might buy a physical copy. I've spent more money on dumber things.
