We can't ever really know what people in the spotlight are like behind the scenes.

You don't know Stephen Colbert, and you didn't know Toby Keith. You know only their public personas. You have no way of knowing the context of their friendship. For all you know, the fact that they were friends is a mark of Colbert's integrity rather than a reason to doubt it.

Antonin Scalia was a close friend of Ruth Bader Ginsburg, and he was also friends with Elena Kagan. While I disagree with many (most?) of Scalia's judicial and political beliefs, I can readily believe that he was a decent man on an interpersonal level.
