Which game should I buy?

(Anonymous) 2024-02-16 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Steam is having a sale and I want to splurge on a game. My options: Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Dragon Age: Origins (Ultimate Edition), Dragon Age 2, or Assassin's Creed: Black Flag.

I've never played any of them, though I've played other AC games and Dragon Age Inquisition. I'd say I'm least excited about The Witcher but I hear such good things I think I've been easily swayed by the masses on that one and am curious.

And if anyone else is looking for a cheap game (these are all around $10) I highly rec Immortals Fenyx Rising. It looks like a goofy kids game at first glance but is is not at all. I bought it on a whim and was sucked in almost immediately. Just a solid uncomplicated fun game with some surprisingly difficult gameplay in places.

I absolutely love Witcher 3! I saw the tv adverts before it came out and we got a PS4 just so we could play it. It was my introduction to that universe and I have since fallen in love with the books and Witcher 2

I’ve played DA: Inquisition and was bored out of my skull. So if you like DA games or lean more towards that type of game, Witcher 3 probably isn’t right for you. I’d definitely check out some gameplay videos before deciding on it. It’s a great game but be warned if you get it that the controls outside of combat can be really annoying.

Funny, it took me about 3 tried before DA:I clicked for me. The first couple times I thought it was somehow too busy/overwhelming and boring at the same time. Then last year I was injured and was going through my backlog of games during recovery and decided to give Inquisition another try and I don't know why but it suddenly clicked. I fell and I fell hard, and I am still playing it off and on. I have like three different characters for different playthroughs that I dip in and out of.

I just remembered my brother in law has the Witcher 3, and he only buys physical copies of games, so I may skip Steam and see if I can borrow his copy for console, if he's not playing it.

I've played Black Flag and Witcher 3.

I really enjoyed the sailing aspect of Black Flag; I spent hours sailing around attacking ships and forts, weathering storms, listening to the sailors sing. Witcher 3 was the better game, though, I think. The story is more cohesive and fleshed out, choices matter, and the characters are more memorable.

The gaming style is different, with Witcher 3 being more RPG than Black Flag. Black Flag is sectioned off into areas that are leveled so you know not to go there (I don't remember if Black Flag has those areas closed off until you level up), whereas Witcher 3 is completely open and you can run across enemies that are way over your level at any time (as I discovered the first time I played it, to my detriment. RIP Geralt the First). Side quests will remain open in Black Flag after you start them. At the very least some, if not most, in Witcher 3 will become fails if you don't act on them immediately (only happened to me once, so I have no stats on this).

Hopefully that helps in some small way.

I'm gonna be real honest with you now and confess something, a big drive for playing Black Flag is just to sail around listening to sea shanties. I used to just spend so much time in Odyssey sailing on my vessel listing to my crew sing. I mean I also just love the AC franchise, but those sea shanties...

I think the sea shanties in Black Flag are better than the ones in Odyssey. However, when I make the singers all women voices in Odyssey... *chefs kiss*

Assassin's Creed: Black Flag.

Because Ralph Ineson. Live deliciously.

A solid argument.
