What're you reading?

(Anonymous) 2024-02-17 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
I'm 3/4 of the way through Bookshops & Bonedust by Travis Baldree and loving it!

I am supposed to be reading Remarkably Bright Creatures for a bookclub but I was not loving that so I'm kind of ignoring it.

I started reading The Priory of the Orange Tree and I'm really liking it. It's certainly taking it's time for set-up but I like that in fantasy adventures and I'm enjoying spotting the real-world mythology the author has been inspired by for some of the lore of the setting. Plus: dragons, and I love dragons.

That's on my TBR! I tried it once but my attention span was not having it, so I put it back on the TBR for future me and haven't gotten back to it yet.

I get that, it's definitely got a lot going on and if you're not in the right headspace for it attention-span wise it won't work. Thankfully mine has settled for this book so I'm having fun rather than making a struggle of it. I hope you get around to it one day anon and hopefully enjoy it!

Furiously Happy by Jenny Lawson. Trying to branch out from horror. Had my sister randomly pick a book out from my libby lists.

How're you liking it? I remember wanting to read that when it first came out but I never got around to it.

I'm enjoying it. Way funnier than I thought. I was chuckling in bed last night reading it.

Thank you for reminding me of this! I loved Travis Baldree’s Legends & Lattes when I flipped between reading and listening to the whole trilogy (?) over the summer. I decided to save Bookshops & Bonedust for another time so I wouldn’t constantly compare the two.

I just finished T. Kingfisher’s The Twisted Ones and so far haven’t found my next read. I guess it’s time to get B&B (:

How did you like The Twisted Ones? The Hollow Places and TWO are my favorite books of hers.

I both loved it and was also a little eh about it. Like the previous one I read, I was picking it up every chance I could instead of just reading at bedtime. But the ending felt a little, idk, rushed? Too tidy? And I don’t think I’d have noticed except Foxy (or someone) calls her Mouse right at the end and it jarred me because I’d forgotten her name. A House With Good Bones was truly scary and creepy and wonderful for me (I haven’t read horror in about 30 years). TTO was a bit creepy but lacked any kind of real malice so fell short of being scary for me. I slept in the woods last night and didn’t once get creeped out by the wildlife scrunching through the leaves while reading about creepy evil effigies in the woods :/

I got the impression I’d prefer The Hollow Places but also that there are a lot of similarities between the two (THP generally being considered a more polished spin/remix of TTO). I’ve decided it’s going to be my next TK read but that I need to read something else so I’m not unfavorably comparing her works. I bet if I’d read something in between AHWGB and TTO I would have enjoyed TTO better. It was her first horror novel and she has really grown as a horror writer since then if AHWGB is anything to go by.

Like 99% of the books I read are horror. I know TK is what I would consider lighter horror. But I do enjoy her works because I know any pets are going to survive.

Good to know! As soon as she mentioned the dog, I had to check doesthedogdie.com

It took me a chapter or two to get into this one, but I am really enjoying it. He has such a calm way of telling a story. Idk if that makes sense, but it's the best way I can think of describing it.

He really does! He was my introduction to cozy fantasy and I’ve read quite a bit since then but none have done it better.
