Yeah this baffled me too because I don't put soapy water in the sink when doing dishes? Is this a thing that people do?

If you don't have soapy water how do you do the dishes? I know some people plug the sink and fill it, but I have a dish pan I fill with soapy water, or if I have one large thing like a pot or a large bowl I fill that with soapy water and then use that pot o' water to wash all the dishes. Then I rinse off the soap and put them in the drying rack.

I put some dish soap on them, scrub them with a sponge, and then rinse them off under the tap. Or if it's a pot or a pan or something, I put some dish soap in, fill it with water and let it soak for a little, and then scrub it and rinse it out.

Then again, I also wash dishes/pots/pans/utensils as soon as I'm done using them, so I never have more than a couple to do at any given time.

NAYRT but I don't fill the sink with water and leave everything swimming in it while I wash, I put the soap on my sponge and wash each dish individually - quick splash of water, turn it off, scrub, turn water back on to rinse.

I mostly do it this way because it takes 5-10 minutes tops to do a day's worth, even with pots and cutting board. And, my kitchen is too small to allocate counter space to drip-dry dishes, they have to dry in the other half of the sink. But tbh I did my time in food service and nothing gives me the ick more than sticking my hand into murky, dirty water with food debris swimming in it to find the next dish, not to mention finding the drain plug at the bottom when I'm done. Yeeeuuuchhhhh no way never again.

I agree with OP, knife safety means not hiding them in the water, which might be as little as a pot soaking. But there are other ways to hand-wash besides filling the sink and letting everything marinate.

Above anon and yeah, this is exactly what I do. I can't understand why people WANT to stick their hands into gross water like that when the other way is so much easier!

Scrub them with a soapy spunge, rinse. Maybe some soapy water for pans and lots. I tried doing soapy water one time, it's disgusting
