Song lyric surprises

(Anonymous) 2024-02-19 03:17 am (UTC)(link)
Any song lyrics you’ve discovered the meaning behind that threw you for a loop because they were totally different to the meaning you’d cooked up in your head?

For me, One Night In Bangkok by Murray Head (about chess) and Peaches by Presidents of the U.S.A (about sex) were two.

Peaches is about sex? My class sang our own parody of that song at a school concert in elementary school when it was popular.

I can see it now, even though I'm skeptical because it's so easy and common to claim any song is about sex and make it seem legit.

the line in the Elton John song "Don't Let The Sun Go Down on Me", "no more of your darkness". This is going to sound really silly but for YEARS I thought he was singing "no more Augie Dog-ness". There used to be a dumb cutesy HB cartoon called Augie Doggie and I thought he meant no more cutesy bullshit.
I also thought Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm by the Crash Test Dummies was about abused kids but they said it wasn't.

I don't remember the title or singer anymore as it was around 20 years ago, but there was this song I liked as a kid that I thought was about self-empowerment, but when I actually read the lyrics it was about accepting Jesus into your heart.
