I don't care for his work but I do think that's just a matter of taste. People whose taste I trust really like him. He can be a charismatic performer in things. I personally cannot abide the Mission Impossible movies, I kind of hate them, but that's a deeper problem than Tom Cruise.

As to people being willing to watch his movies... look, I don't like Tom Cruise at all as a person but it's hard for me to judge people for watching his movies for two reasons. One, the background radiation of shitty evilness in popular culture is so strong that it's hard to draw a bright-line around specific people without very strong evidence of their misdeeds. And everyone has to draw their own line differently. I still think Chinatown is a great movie and Polanski is a much worse human being than Tom Cruise.

Two, I think it's genuinely very hard for people to figure out what the situation is with Cruise because it's hard to figure out how much he's a perpetrator and how much he's a victim. It's genuinely murky. It's confusing.

Give me a break, of course he’s not a victim. He’s as bad as the top people in it, because he is a top person in it.

You have a lot to learn about cults.

(Anonymous) 2024-02-20 09:04 am (UTC)(link)
I used to be in a cult don’t fucking try and tell me I need to learn about cults.

(Anonymous) 2024-02-20 12:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, then I guess you're a bad person that we shouldn't listen to.

So try learning about empathy, multiple truths, and critical thinking next.

You may have experience with one thing but it doesn't mean you're the authority on it.

I can’t believe you’re caping this hard for Tom fucking Cruise.

(Anonymous) 2024-02-20 04:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I think that's probably basically true.

It's still hard for people to recognize it. It is murky. It is confusing. So as a result, people are confused about it.

You are coming to this conversation with a very clear, definite, sharp understanding of Tom Cruise's role in Scientology and how much he's complicit in the cult's abuses. Other people do not have that same clear, definite position on it.
