(Anonymous) 2024-02-20 03:08 am (UTC)(link)As to people being willing to watch his movies... look, I don't like Tom Cruise at all as a person but it's hard for me to judge people for watching his movies for two reasons. One, the background radiation of shitty evilness in popular culture is so strong that it's hard to draw a bright-line around specific people without very strong evidence of their misdeeds. And everyone has to draw their own line differently. I still think Chinatown is a great movie and Polanski is a much worse human being than Tom Cruise.
Two, I think it's genuinely very hard for people to figure out what the situation is with Cruise because it's hard to figure out how much he's a perpetrator and how much he's a victim. It's genuinely murky. It's confusing.

(Anonymous) 2024-02-20 04:27 pm (UTC)(link)It's still hard for people to recognize it. It is murky. It is confusing. So as a result, people are confused about it.
You are coming to this conversation with a very clear, definite, sharp understanding of Tom Cruise's role in Scientology and how much he's complicit in the cult's abuses. Other people do not have that same clear, definite position on it.
