That particular snobbery has been around since at least the 1950s, sometimes it bubbles up but it never goes away.

I see secrets like this and I'm always baffled. I'm in quite a few book groups, though nothing specifically for scifi, and I've never seen this kind of snobbery you're talking about. I mean sure once in awhile you'll get a one off, but mostly people just like to rave about what they like and mostly seem to either people join in or scroll by.

But it's also funny because I hang around a lot of "low stakes" and "cozy" book spaces and those places love low key scifi. Nobody every raves or looks for hard scifi or military stuff. So it's just funny to me how varied 'fandom' experiences can be.

Although I agree that the vast majority of Tom Cruise's movies over the last couple of decades have been bad, I will die on the hill of MI: Fallout being great.

I judge people for believing that they are the final arbiters in a field that is heavily subjective. It is truly something to think that literally millions of people are wrong for liking things that you don't like, rather than attributing it to different taste.

I guess we both have to live with our burdens.

I don't care for his work but I do think that's just a matter of taste. People whose taste I trust really like him. He can be a charismatic performer in things. I personally cannot abide the Mission Impossible movies, I kind of hate them, but that's a deeper problem than Tom Cruise.

As to people being willing to watch his movies... look, I don't like Tom Cruise at all as a person but it's hard for me to judge people for watching his movies for two reasons. One, the background radiation of shitty evilness in popular culture is so strong that it's hard to draw a bright-line around specific people without very strong evidence of their misdeeds. And everyone has to draw their own line differently. I still think Chinatown is a great movie and Polanski is a much worse human being than Tom Cruise.

Two, I think it's genuinely very hard for people to figure out what the situation is with Cruise because it's hard to figure out how much he's a perpetrator and how much he's a victim. It's genuinely murky. It's confusing.

I wish it were interesting criticism though, or that the people wailing about how Tracker was Too Mean To Kirsten, or Kirsten is Toxic And Abusive To Cassandra could make any point other than 'I don't understand what comedy is, how improv works, or why adults with teenage characters are making different choices than you, an actual 15 years old (I have to assume that these idiots are all still in school) would have made in real life.'

Mind you, I did see someone on reddit justify the (inane, unjustified) hate that Emily gets by describing Fig as "predatory & rapey" which is just so wonderfully stupid that it delighted me. That's discourse baybey!

Personally I think much of this could have been avoided if the Bad Kids had just beat Jawbone to death with hammers in S1 thus shutting the door firmly on The Worlds Best Therapy Dad.

For sure, and fans like this have always existed. It gets magnified to a ridiculous degree because of social media but I can remember meeting non-chill fans of artists/bands irl who thought I'd said I wanted to come over a kick their pet if I said I didn't like their personal fave artist. Not even trashing the artist, just simply saying something very banal like: 'I don't really care for their music' when ASKED if I liked the artist. Some people very much affix a lot of themselves into the media/music they like.

The real issue is this kind of behavior is being encouraged in online fan groups, or even expected if you like an artist at all, and that's the part that troubles me because there leaves next to no level of moderation when talking about art. You can love something very much but not have it be a personal attack if someone else doesn't like it the same way and that kind of attitude is dying online.

Venting

Friday afternoon I got into a pretty bad accident. I injured my knee, shoulder, dislocated some ribs, got a bunch of abrasions on my face, and fractured my orbital bone. I'm in pain and overall not feeling great but I'm actually not in as much pain as I expected to be (and I haven't even taken pain meds since Saturday morning). I couldn't even really open my eye more than a few mm until yesterday morning and have been going kind of crazy not being able to do much but lay in bed, but the doctor said that by today, if I felt up to it I could read/use the computer as long as it didn't cause any pain (and to stop if it did). I've found I need to take breaks and can't spend as long in front of a screen as I normally can, but I'm glad I can at least do something.

It's just frustrating that while I'm sitting still, nothing hurts too bad and I feel almost normal, but then I move the wrong way and I'm reminded. My face is swollen and bruised and I don't know if I'll ever look normal again. I'm staying with my parents and they keep reminding me that it's only been 3 days and I went through something pretty traumatic and my injuries are going to take awhile to heal and I need to be patient. But I'm so over it and just want things to be normal again.
