30 over here!

(Come to think of it, how old must Gaiman be at this point?)

(Anonymous) 2024-02-21 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
65? Just a guess, but I remember seeing his age at one point and clocking that Gaiman was slightly older than my dad, so he must be thereabouts now.

I’m assuming the author is very young and doesn’t really communicate with a wide circle outside of fandom. It would throw me out of the fic if that’s their primary way of messaging each other because they’d be far more likely to use WhatsApp. But 30 isn’t too old to be using tumblr in general.

What age do you think uses tumblr?

(Anonymous) 2024-02-21 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
Why? There are a lot of 30year old, and even older, professionals using Tumblr irl.

(Anonymous) 2024-02-21 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
Are kids using tumblr? I just kind of assumed it was majority older, like 30+, and kids had other new cooler places to hang. Like tiktok or smthng.

31, using Tumblr for a long time now and probably won't stop. I'm not the only one.

It's weird that anyone would keep daily interaction on Tumblr when there are other, better messaging services for that specific need, but it's really not strange at all for people over 30 to use the site. There's a bunch of us who do and I've already had run-ins with people in their 40's up to their 70's over there. We don't just get blocked out of using certain websites because we age, lmao.

(Anonymous) 2024-02-21 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, honey. I'm a 41 professional that uses tumblr. I can't shitpost at work.

(Anonymous) 2024-02-21 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
52, professional using tumblr

(Anonymous) 2024-02-21 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
Why is that so weird? Tumblr is 17 years old. I would bet there are still people on it that were on it then. In fact, I would guess that a not insignificant number of users have been on it for years. If something still exists, it has a user base. People don't necessarily stop using something because it's not the in the zeitgeist.

I used to talk to my friend all day long on tumblr brcause it was the only place that had a messenger not blackisted by her work lol

(Anonymous) 2024-02-21 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
48 year old professional here with a wide circle of professionals who are tumblr friends. There's honestly a surprising number of fellow healthcare workers on there!

(Anonymous) 2024-02-21 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
On the one hand, I have SEVERAL friends who, like me, are in their 30s, and who are in various professional fields, and who are very much on tumblr... on the other hand, using tumblr for chat purposes is like... almost NEVER my go-to. If they're starting out as people who would not exchange numbers or private email, why aren't they like... in a discord or on telegram or something?

(Anonymous) 2024-02-21 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
I was in my early 40s when I started using Tumblr...in 2012. Not as active as I used to be there because the porn ban kind of killed my enthusiasm for it but I still keep in touch with people over there. Why would it be weird for 30-year-olds to use it?

(Anonymous) 2024-02-21 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
38, used tumblr exclusively since 2011

(Anonymous) 2024-02-21 03:29 am (UTC)(link)
I'm with the replies saying plenty of people that age are on Tumblr, but personally I almost never use the chat on the site. That's the part that would feel unusual to me in a fic.

Pushing forty and still using Tumblr!

(Anonymous) 2024-02-21 04:35 am (UTC)(link)
I don't use tumblr for chatting, but I've been on it for years. I think in fandom spaces, people tend to make assumptions about users being on the young side and forgetting that fandom's been around for a looooooooong time now in online spaces, and predates online spaces.

Another one for adult 30+ using tumblr. Also I occasionally use chat function there. We do have better messaging systems to use but sometimes start talking with sending some fandom post. It's easier on tumblr

(Anonymous) 2024-02-21 07:52 am (UTC)(link)
44, using Tumblr and still missing LiveJournal in its heyday. :(

(Anonymous) 2024-02-21 08:46 am (UTC)(link)
If the characters within the fic are fannish or people who lean toward having nerdy interests, I wouldn't blink an eye (as people said, there are many professionals over 30 who use Tumblr!). But if the characters in canon/the fic are very bro-y with no fannish/nerdy interests, I would indeed be very confused by the choice.

News flash, there's lots of 30-something professionals on Tumblr. The userbase is aging up as people who joined in the 2010s have often stayed there. (and personally, I was already in my 30s when I joined way back then.)

(Anonymous) 2024-02-25 08:59 pm (UTC)(link)
The age thing isn't weird -- tons of over 30 people on tumblr. The weird thing is the breaking of the 4th wall, since tumblr is so fandom-oriented. It would definitely make me go eh? It's better to stay generic and just say "messaged" and show the text.
