I’m assuming the author is very young and doesn’t really communicate with a wide circle outside of fandom. It would throw me out of the fic if that’s their primary way of messaging each other because they’d be far more likely to use WhatsApp. But 30 isn’t too old to be using tumblr in general.

Depends on the country, I think? WhatsApp isn't all that popular in the US, for example.

Maybe that one is an age thing. Or maybe regions? I’m in the US and constantly having to tell people I don’t have WhatsApp.

People I meet my age (late 30s), also in the US, are way more likely to ask if you have an Insta or a Discord. I've never had anyone in my life ask if I have WhatsApp.

Thats funny. US, 40yo, I have never had anyone offline ask if I had Discord or Instagram but I have had people ask if I had WhatsApp.

I've actually never had anyone online ask if I had instagram either, come to think of it. I've def had online people ask if I ised Discord tho.

Huh interesting. Thats my primary app for chats and texting and I'm in the US. What are other people using?

When I was living in the U.S., it was just the SMS app (Messages on iPhone, for example) or Facebook Messenger. For a while it was Snapchat, but that collapsed hard, is my impression. There are a couple of people I keep in touch with through Google Chat but that's always been a pretty niche choice.
