Way back in the early internet days I used to pirate everything - as did everyone basically. I stopped for whatever reason and now I am so far out of the loop I have zero idea how to even pirate stuff. I am jealous of your mad skills on the choppy seas.

I’m in the same boat, pun not intended. I knew all the torrent ins and outs, plus all the dodgy upload sites. The better upload sites weren’t well known and their content survived the MegaUpload nuclear fallout but a few years ago they all got purged.

Biggest recommendation, get a VPN if you're going to start pirating again.

I like qBittorrent myself. :)

It's good, too. I'm used to Deluge....

Check out the piracy subreddit and its wiki and megathread- tons of info on how and where to start sailing the high seas. https://www.reddit.com/r/Piracy/wiki/megathread/

The sites I frequent are a couple forums that are now locked to new users. Plus a couple music-specific blogs. I haven't had luck with torrents because our internet company always figures out and blocks us if I do that, even if I use a VPN. So I download full files from different sites.

You just reminded me i used to be a member of a few small LJ and DW groups that shared files. It was invite only and pretty hush hush. I cant even remember how I got in. What fun that was!

(Anonymous) 2024-02-22 01:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Aw man, same! I am still so bummed about my ISP still managing to cut off my downloads even with an VPN on. I feel like I'm getting the trait beaten out of me and it sucks.

(Anonymous) 2024-02-23 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
How would they be able to tell you're pirating if you're using a VPN? The whole point is that they can't see what you're doing, no?

I have no idea. And I have no issue using other download methods. Just can't torrent.

I never really stopped; I'm not going to pay a monthly fee to access a small selection of media.

1000x agree!

(Anonymous) 2024-02-22 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
Someone on Tumblr put it very well: piracy used to be prevalent due to lack of access, on the general consensus that we would stop once distribution improved and we'd actually be able to buy shows legally. And now they're taking that option away from us again.
We didn't break the agreement, they did.

(Anonymous) 2024-02-22 03:20 am (UTC)(link)
Piracy was less prevalent for a bit!

(Anonymous) 2024-02-22 04:27 am (UTC)(link)
Yup. I wasn't pirating things for a small bit. Now we are back in business

(Anonymous) 2024-02-22 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, the whole Crunchyroll thing sucks. Even if it’s a digital copy that came with a physical DVD, I deserve to keep my digital copy. And after they cannibalized RightStuf, it’s gotten harder to buy affordable physical media for anime, so to the high seas we go.

(Anonymous) 2024-02-22 05:38 am (UTC)(link)
Deets on what happened to Right Stuf, please? I've been out of the loop for a while.

From what I heard and the little I know Crunchyroll pretty much did a hostile takeover of RightStuf. Potentially also Nozomi Entertainment as well-they certainly well and truly fucked up the Dirty Pair kickstarter Nozomi was doing in collaboration with RightStuf at the very least.

If I buy something that can be taken away, I also pirate a copy. This has worked out well for music around 10 years old, which is kind of sad, and now that DVD sets are rare, I've got plenty of loved shows, too.
