Things that make you feel old?

(Anonymous) 2024-02-22 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
I'm old enough to remember what typewriters felt like, when students didn't have to pay for printing and when a can of coke was $0.60. What makes you feel old?

Gas was 90 cents a gallon when I was in high school. Also, critical reading and textual analysis was considered important and taught - at my school at the very least. Seeing kids, who consider themselves leftist or even queer themselves, falling prey to purity culture makes me so goddamned sad and feel so old, because I thought we had progressed past this and do not have the energy to go through all of that again.

My knees sucked in high school, but my hands, feet and gut are all feeling their age.

For me, it’s my back. It’s always aching.

When my teenage niece described the music I listened to as classic rock. Also when she raided my wardrobe to find an outfit for her school’s Y2K party.

I remember what typewriters felt like too because my aunt had one. I loved playing with that thing.

We had a typewriter in the house when I was young! I also recall using a rotary phone.

Other things:
-life before the widespread adoption of computers and the internet
-every item in a vending machine costing less than a dollar
-the real, literal dollar menu at McDonald's. You could get two entire cheeseburgers for a single dollar.
-loading and unloading film in a manual camera, and sending the film off to be processed at a photo studio. The anticipation and delight of receiving the package of processed photos back in the mail.
-"must watch" network TV that everyone tuned into

lol, it was 3 cents a page on the dot matrix printer, a nickel a page on the laser printer in B&W and 7 cents a page for color for me. Which, uh. Doesn't exactly make me feel young. A can of coke was 75 cents and a bottle was a buck. Unless you were/knew an honors student -- it was 35 cents a can in the honors office fridge because the admin bought it at Meijer and just charged what it cost her rounded up to the nearest nickel.

But a couple of things that make me feel old are the price of poor people food (I remember when instant ramen was 3 for a dollar) and that most of the younger generation don't know any pop culture from more than 10 or 15 years ago. I'm pretty sure the latter is the direct result of streaming services - used to be if you wanted to watch TV, you were kind of stuck watching whatever was on, and at weird times of the morning or night that tended to either be reruns of shows from 30+ years ago, old movies, the Simpsons or infomercials. All of which tended to give you at least a vague knowledge of mid to late 20th century pop culture whether you wanted it or not.

My cat group had a meme about posting our earliest photos of ourselves with cats. Most of us are 70s babies and hooboy those photos looked absolutely ancient. We also have some fully fledged adults who shared photos from this century that were taken on digital cameras.

Also, the guy at the garage the other day asking me a question when we were making small talk. I couldn’t remember all the details and I said I couldn’t because it happened in 2002. “Oh wow, that was a really long time ago! I wasn’t even born yet.” He had a beard. A full beard. He was a grown man. I felt like checking myself into the nursery home.

I remember arguments against seat belt laws.
I remember watching movies that were honestly a little too much for me at the age I was because PG-13 didn't exist at the time.
I remember being a free-range child, able to go out and tromp around for literal miles and hours with "I'm going to go play outside" being a sufficient enough explanation for where I'd be.

+1

I remember going out during the school holidays and not being back until dusk/dinner time. I wasn't allowed outside of where we stayed, which was a caravan park my godparents owned and cared for, but I was pretty much a free-range child. Technology as we know it didn't exist and the closest thing we had to video games was the arcade.

Woo, yeah, this one counts. I work at a medical clinic and I often have to get release of information forms signed by patients, and it REALLY throws me when I get someone who was born in 2002 or 2003, 'cause I'm like, "...oh, right, they're old enough to legally sign this."

Realizing that movies that were made in the 70's and took place in the 40's and far more time has passed since they were made.
Remembering those little kiosk things that people drove up to and dropped their film off at to be developed.
Remembering what time and day of the week it was being significant as to what you could watch on TV (and I do NOT miss the fact that they used to put the WORST movies and TV shows in the world on weekend afternoons!)
The fact that nobody, not even other people who are the same age I am, remembers some of my favorite TV shows from when I was a kid. Also, some of my favorite foods that have been discontinued never show up on those lists.

I'm one of the oldest people at my job somehow, even though I'm only in my mid 30s. And I've only been working there a couple years. But most of my coworkers joined the company RIGHT out of college whereas I came here after working at a totally different job for a few years and then going through a long spell of unemployment.

The creators of canon for all my current fandoms being younger than me.

Other adult-aimed canons I can't get into because the writing feels like someone with an immature view of the world wrote it.

I'm not prepared for the 40th anniversary of Ghostbusters and the Transformers franchise and also my being alive...

At least I know one of the people behind today's secrets is always ready to make me feel young again, and literally all I have to do is vibe???

A 22 year-old coworker of mine jokingly called me old and out-of-touch by saying, "Oh, you millennials!" Then I told her that I was too old to be a millennial and was instead Gen X, and the look of shock on her face was something else.
