AYRT is leaving out that the difference in political affiliation is a reflection of the class divide in the US: white liberals and white conservatives overwhelmingly belong to different classes than one another, and the contempt they have for each other flows from that.

Bullshit.

The differences are not primarily class differences. They are primarily cultural differences, social differences, geographic differences. Not primarily class differences.

And tbh it's a hell of a lot more socially acceptable for rural and exurban conservatives to express disdain for urban liberals - not just disdain but active foaming at the mouth hatred - than anything close to the reverse. I mean people ITT are trying to say it's classist to state the empirical truth that rural white conservatives vote for Republicans; compare that to the kind of wild things that Republicans can say about Americans in cities and it's considered totally normal politics.
