Right thread. Mermaids aren't cryptids. They're mythic creatures.

Fiji disagrees, they are definitely cryptids. All mythological creatures are cryptids, by definition, but not all cryptids also feature in mythology. It is a subset.

I love mermaid AUs in my fandoms where the mermaid in question is absolutely a literal man-eater. Other half of the pairing, be they human, must prove they're not just lunch!
