It's the internet. People have been lying about, well, just about everything in order to take advantage of other people (monetarily or otherwise) since its inception.

I'm disinclined to believe "I'm disabled, so you need to pay me," but I'm disinclined to believe any reason someone online gives for wanting money. And now that I have a job dealing with fraud, that position has only hardened.
