There's plenty of straight women in fem slash circles. And just because I like some Transformer slash dosen't mean I'm a robot (hurf)! So I don't think your sexuality is the entirety of your choice in slash. Don't feel so left out, you're by no means an odd ball! :D

There are lots of lesbians in slashfandom. Seriously, LOTS. You're not alone, it doesn't make you weird, etc etc etc.

I could go into it more, but I'm kind of sick of the tangent it would take, so no go on that route-- do want a copy of the picture you used for this secret, though. XD

Here you are!

um, I always wander if people are more bisexual than they think. I'm always seeing these secrets "I'm straight BUT..." "I'm gay BUT..." not everything is black and white... not everyone prefers both genders the same, but defining yourself as just 'gay' or 'straight' I think is too narrow. There are exceptions and we're all people, yknow? Whatever.

I think its just a matter of taste. I'm bisexual, with more preference towards women the majority of the time but I can't read femslash, only slash.

You aren't alone though (I can't really say I'm with you, because I do gush about how hot the men are) there are a lot of lesbians in slash.

[identity profile] seiberwing.livejournal.com 2009-07-29 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
You're not alone, there's plenty of lesbians in slash fandoms. And sexuality can get pretty complicated--I appear to be functionally asexual and I still love it.

Amazing choice of image. :D

And about the secret, sexuality has nothing to do with your fandom choices of pairings. At least for me. I'm straight woman, but I like slash and femmeslash too. :p It has more to do with the pairing itself, I think. :p

I tend to be very picky about my femmeslash. Not the pairing so much as the dynamic. I prefer femdom, or failing that, pairings where one character is absolutely desperately, breathlessly, obsessively in love with the other. So I end up looking for fic with certain characters that I think will actually provide that dynamic, rather than the ones that look cute together. Femmeslash is rare enough, I don't find what I like very often.

I find that messed up dynamics in slash more often.

This is so me two years ago. I've decided not to be neurotic about it anymore.

[identity profile] teh-faolkitty.livejournal.com 2009-07-29 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I do not understand this phenomenon (-dances-. also, as an aside, I am a girl who likes girls, who likes reading about girls who like girls, for the most part, which is what I meant about 'this phenomenon'. alsoalso, run-on sentence much? meh.) and suspect there are a number of variables aside from simply which gender you're interested in in terms of whether you enjoy slash/femslash/het/gen, in much the same manner as different people enjoy different genres in terms of sci fi/fantasy, but you seem so stressed about it that I really kinda just wanna give you a hug =(

That picture + caption is rather hilarious, btw.

[identity profile] sophiamoon.livejournal.com 2009-07-29 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm as lesbian as humanly possible(the never been with a man, been with the same woman for over 25 years kind) and I write m/m slash. And that includes very detailed sex. Of the kinky variety if need be. ;-)

Some things I don't share with my fandom friends, but so what? There are things I don't share with other lesbians (and no, it's not writing m/m slash I'm talking about)

I'm a married woman (Dutch, so it's legal here) with a family. That's my reality.
This here is my hobby. I enjoy it, so should you.

I'm a lesbian in slash fandom. So is my wife. So is my best friend, and a friend from work. I never feel left out; I really don't think there are that few of us.

I'm physically a little more attracted to women than men IRL, I'm in an LTR with a man right now, I usually read & write m/m in fanfic and I usually write f/f original fic. While I know it doesn't mean a whole damn lot, my slash habit is a bit puzzling to me because on, like, just the level of trying to visualise everything I don't find the m/m sex I write that hot - it's the passion I find in the pairings that's hot to me, and I try to get that passion into the writing using sex as a vehicle for it, basically.

sorry, I'm just rambling here really. tl;dr this bi gal totally gets you.

[identity profile] bluepard.livejournal.com 2009-07-30 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
It's possible that you like slash not because of the genders, but because it's mostly written by women for women with the same tastes as you, or because of the personalities of the characters, or because of certain dynamics that are common in slash but not femmeslash, etc...

Also, yet another person who loves that picture.

[identity profile] elmathelas.livejournal.com 2009-07-30 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
Bitch magazine had an entire issue dedicated to Fanfiction. It's the one with a brain on the cover and the title FANtastic Journey, if you happen to know anyone who collects them. They had a whole article about queer women liking slash and the relative popularity of m/m slash versus f/f. It was all academic and shit but I think it might have boiled down to "it's just really hot, ok?"

I'm always surprised by how many slash fans are lesbians. I'm bi, technically, but I've been with the same woman for 10 years and I expect for the rest of my life so I refer to myself as a lesbian-- still, I realize that I have perhaps a more visceral draw towards male actors than a life-long lesbian. For the first year or so that I read slash I was like OMG WTF is wrong with my BRAIN this does not make SENSE but I guess I'm just over that now.

[identity profile] ponysushi.livejournal.com 2009-07-30 02:04 am (UTC)(link)
I so know where you are coming from about feeling like the odd one out for not thinking the main characters/actors are hot. I'm stuck in a fandom (supernatural) where you're practically shit on for not thinking Jensen and Jared are the most gorgeous men on planet earth. Hey, I'll admit they're good looking. It doesn't mean I want to fuck them. Heck, I find Misha downright gorgeous but that doesn't mean I'm sexually attracted to him.

But, I sometimes like to read Dean/Castiel slash (or some other m/m pairing) because of the emotional and mental aspects of it, not the sexual. Plus I'll scream if I read another cheesy porn cliche written for them.

[identity profile] generationxwing.livejournal.com 2009-07-30 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
Oh my god, I know how you feel so much. I thought I was the only one.

I'm a lesbian, but I'd much rather watch, say, Shelter, than.... Lost and Delirious. Same goes for RPing. Yuri bores me.

Hit me up for a chat sometime, OP.

[identity profile] sugarsurge.livejournal.com 2009-07-30 03:50 am (UTC)(link)
IDEFK. I have a lesbian friend who likes slash and femslash, but she leans more towards the latter. I don't really know why it's like that, it just is. Your pairing preference doesn't indicate too much about your sexuality. I'm pretty comfortable with everything.

[identity profile] tuulensisko.livejournal.com 2009-07-30 03:33 pm (UTC)(link)
ARE. YOU. ME? orz

I... don't have lots of lesbian friends, actually, mostly just bi. So yeah, I know exactly what you mean. Though, at least I get to gush about the girls too. :'D I do like yuri but I just still haven't found a fandom with GOOD yuri that I enjoy. *sob* It's always either really bad or I just don't like the pairing. And even if I find a pairing I like, I'll be the only one ever to ship them.

But yeah, it sometimes weirds me out how I like to read gay porn even though the thought of having sex with a man myself makes me just go "... ew no". Uhh. Idek. It's just good to know I'm not alone. orz

Especially I remember being in my early teens and everybody else (... meaning, the girls) was fawning over all these boy bands and handsome actors and all that and I was in my own corner thinking Princess Leia was really hot in that slave girl outfit... =3=
