You have misinterpreted that ending 100%. Notice that Shinji says "my life is worth living here." "Here" = Instrumentality. The plot of the last two TV episodes is that Instrumentality happened, and we're seeing it all from Shinji's perspective. Do they come right out and say it's Instrumentality? Yes, check the beginning of episode 25.

The Shinji in the TV series gives up entirely and chooses to live in a false world filled with the praise of friends and enemies alike (did Gendo ever really have anything good to say about him, after all?). He took the easy way out.

Now if you watch End of Evangelion, which I highly recommend, you'll see the events leading up to Third Impact and even where the two endings coincide. Episodes 25 and 26 actually happen during the events in the two movies, though you'll have to look very hard to find them. If you want the complete Evangelion story, watch the movies. Yes, both the things you mentioned do happen in the movies, but you'll understand why once you see the context. You'll find that the ending in the movies, while depressing at first, has a great deal more to say in favor of Shinji's personality than the fake, seemingly drug-induced happiness thrown at viewers in the sloppy TV ending.

THANK YOU. I was getting concerned that my boyfriend and I might be the only ones who interpreted the endings that way. The TV ending is like 1984 or the Maria ending of Silent Hill 2. The movie one is actually uplifting. If you have the will, you can come back and live your life as a human, as yourself, free. That's beautiful.

I approve this interpretation. :)

I hope you don't mind a little discussion on the topic!

I posted a longass comment below about why I think he denies instrumentality in the TV end. I'm a bit confused why you think the idealized world is instrumentality; instrumentality is when there are no divisions between people, hence there cannot be an Asuka like in that world, or a Shinji in that world, should instrumentality have happened. They wouldn't exist.

The process of instrumentality is occurring, but Shinji doesn't make his choice until the last minute or so. The idealized world, to me, is symbolic of how one can choose to see their world; right afterwards, Shinji remarks how the real world doesn't seem so bad after seeing that, because "this is also a world." He goes on to talk about how the him in that world is one who isn't an Eva pilot. Now, Shinji obsesses over his identity as an EVa pilot the entire series. To me, him watching that idealized world shows him that he has the choice to see beyond himself as an Eva pilot, that he can expand the parameters of his world in real life, that real life does not need to be doom and gloom because it is he who decides how to interpret his surroundings. "I am more than just an Eva pilot," "I have the possibility for happiness"--that is how his reaction reads to me. The minimalistic cartoon earlier on really exemplifies this. So I find it hard, I guess, to see the idealized world as instrumentality when it seems to contradict the basic rule of instrumentality--the melding of souls into one--and given that Shinji immediately links that world to 'the real world' after viewing it.

After he views it, too, everyone talks similarly about deciding one's reaction to things. It rains, you can feel gloomy. But you have also be happy. At one point, Shinji flexes his hand--an acknowledgment of control, I like to think, and when he says, "I can live here," I always linked 'here' to the real world. 'I have control; I can decide how to perceive life.'

That was how I interpreted the TV ending. Although I agree that, without the movie, it doesn't stand so well on its own.

I haven't watched the series in a while, although I did find the last episode online to double check some things. I wouldn't be surprised if I got a couple things wrong, so please correct me if I do! Either way, I haven't any good Evangelion discussion in a while, so I hope you don't mind my response!
