I think pretty much everyone takes icon crediting way, way too seriously.

I think that too. I saw a shitty icon I made in use somewhere and left a comment saying "Hey, cool, someone's using an icon I made" and she responded with, "Oh it's yours? I'll credit." I honestly didn't give a damn and I was a little surprised by that reaction.

Buuuuuut at the same time she was like, "Oh I picked it up somewhere and I didn't know who made it" and that was an obvious lie because I'm pretty sure the only time she saw it was when I was using it. Because she lied in that moment I sympathized with the attitude I hate. Besides once I learned that people freak out about credit, I save LJ icons with the creator's name even though I only use icons I make myself and it seems like a good policy for everyone to follow.

I only wish people would credit icons because that's how I sometimes find other cool icons. For me, that's the main purpose. So other people can go to the icon maker's journal and see what else they've done. I hate when I see an awesome icon for a fandom that I love and I want to see if the person did any for other characters, but I can't find their journal.

Same, which is why I credit icons myself (also because I'm so sick of icon draamaaa).

But at the same time, pretty much every icon maker uses source images that they didn't draw, film, or photograph themselves. And at the same time, the fanartists are drawing works they don't own the rights to, and screencappers are posting pictures they don't own either. So while I'd sympathize with the creators of the original works if they had an issue, I find it a little ridiculous for anyone in fandom to get really worked up over credit.
