THIS.

I don't use fanart icons unless I get permission directly from the artist, but yes yes yes. I think I'd be more okay with the whole issue if a lot of iconmakers weren't so damn insistent that I credit them! All you did was crop a really gorgeous piece of fanart into 100x100 box and you want me to comment/credit/join your comm?

Um.

... no.

(Anonymous) 2009-07-29 08:51 pm (UTC)(link)
If I see a nice icon, I grabbed it, and I don't credit.
Frankly I don't give a sh*t who made it.
What are they going to do? Sic the internet police on me?

(Anonymous) 2009-07-29 09:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Hahah, same here. I don't give a flying fuck how much time you spent on your creative cropping.

I know this is gonna sound dickish, but I don't even bother crediting or restricting myself when someone posts unshareable icons on their icon community... icons with fanart. Fuck you, you didn't make it, I'll enjoy it as I please.

OT, but why do people post unshareable icons in their icon posts anyhow?

Yeah, I can't see jumping through those kind of hoops to use someone elses icon. It gives me the feeling that they really aren't sure they want their icon's being used by other people. And if they feel that way, I don't want to use them. So these days I tend to just make my own icons. They might not be works of art, but I don't have to worry about anyone elses feelings.

(Anonymous) 2009-07-29 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I cannot stand having to join anyone's community/journal in order to look at their fanfiction or icons. I'm just looking not wanting to be your friend.

(Anonymous) 2009-07-29 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed so much. I find that "COMMENT&CREDIT OR ELSE! >:c" attitude to be... idk, hypocritical? especially since someone used fanart I made and dumped it under the umbrella of "Japanese fanart". Oh lol

[identity profile] dbzmerciter2005.livejournal.com 2009-07-29 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Pffft, I don't do that. As long as you credit me I couldn't care less if you use my icons. Commenting is nice but I really don't care.

[identity profile] midare-shinami.livejournal.com 2009-07-29 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
This. If they are going to be little snots about it, I'm not crediting. If they ask nicely, it's a different story.
If I were and icon maker, tough, I would let people do whatever they wanted with those. :I Those are just 100x100 graphics, people, chill out.

[identity profile] mojotmonkey.livejournal.com 2009-07-29 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I almost want comments more than credit, just so I know people ARE liking and using them, but I actually make a note at the end of all my icon posts that credit is nice, but not necessary. Mostly to counteract all the icon makers you're talking about. XD

(Anonymous) 2009-07-29 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
this is more to people replying than to the actual secret itself, but... iconning IS a little more than just cropping an image. not nearly as much work as making actual art, with this I agree, but people just saying "oh look you cropped an image" really need to stop being so ignorant. Iconing is SERIOUS BUSINESS!!!!!!

seriously though, good icons aren't that easy. do it yourself if you think it's so easy and don't bother with other people's icons then.

I agree that the crediting issue is completely dumb, just say who made the icon and be done with it, but the fanart one isn't much better. this is the internet, with all the imageboards around, art is bound to get used without permission.

I always credit and comment if I find it in a post (sometimes I find icons looking though someone's profile), but that's it. I'm certainly not going to join your journal or comm just to use a freaking icon.

(Anonymous) 2009-07-29 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't mind crediting, because it takes me all of 5 seconds to do and I figure if someone likes the icon and wants to see more similar ones- then that will point them where I got the icon (it also helps me remember in case I want to get more from that icon maker.)

But people who want you to join their f-locked community annoy me to know end. I hate when I go to fandom icon communities only to find never ending posts of people posting "previews" to their icons and then posting a link to their locked post.

I will admit icon making is more then cropping but I'm not joining 50 fucking communities just to have a few 100X100 images.

Eh, I credit fanart icons, every single one of them.

That is, I credit the artist.

It's not worth the drama to bother with other people's icons much of the time. If I see one I like, unless a friend made it, I'll get the same pic and make my own 100x100 square of the same area, and run it through the appropriate photoshop filters. Oshitson, that was so hard.

I don't understand how bitchy people get about icons and such. I make icons. I make photo manips. I make videos. I'm always very flattered when I see them randomly on the internet. It means someone liked my work enough to use it/share it.

[identity profile] lljscrawls.livejournal.com 2009-07-30 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah . . . I really, really love beautiful icons, and I do think that icon makers should get credit if I use their work - because I know I couldn't do the same. The only time I don't credit is if I got the icon a long time ago and don't remember where I got it from, but other than that, I always try to credit.

But . . . I mean, icons shouldn't be used to just get attention. If you're doing something to broaden your f!list or make yourself more popular . . . that's just cheap, yo. Do something because you enjoy it, not for the attention whoring.

Although, I do think that iconists should ask permission before using fanart. If they don't want people using their icons without credit/permission, then they shouldn't use fanart without giving credit/permission. Don't be hypocrites, guys.

[identity profile] berrypop90.livejournal.com 2009-07-30 12:59 am (UTC)(link)

FUCK YOU GRAPHIC ELITISTS. I'M NOT GOING TO CREDIT UNLESS I FEEL LIKE IT AND I'M DEFINITELY NOT FRIENDING YOUR DUMB ASS JOURNAL.

And what is with those who keep their graphics public for only like, 4 days? Seriously?

[identity profile] erised-mirror.livejournal.com 2009-07-30 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't know joining was a rule :| I thought it was some kind of pimping, you know, like 'If you liked the set, then join! lol!'.
Is is a rule, really, like the 'credit' rule? Man, I've been doing it wrong for such a long time o_o

I'm not that familiar with LJ, and I don't even know how to credit icons. I mean, is there like a page you put on your journal listing the source or something?

So basically that's why I'm too afraid to use new icons. :

[identity profile] planetes.livejournal.com 2009-07-30 08:31 am (UTC)(link)
I remember when I first started using LJ and was looking for icons, whenever I saw "THIS IS HOW YOU CREDIT. DO IT FUCKER"... I didn't even bother looking at their icons. Sure, I now have, at least, made it a habit to add "_username" whenever I save them.

Also, I don't mind it if people don't credit me if they use my icons. I wouldn't exactly want them to be claimed as their own, but, you know. And comments are great. I love receiving comments, but it doesn't bother me if people don't leave a comment before taking them. It's not like they're that good, anyway.

And I almost never leave a comment before taking icons 8(

IAWTS. It's so obnoxious when they make joining the comm a requirement to even see the icons. Also, I always credit, but don't always feel like commenting. I roll my eyes upon seeing that "COMMENT OR ELSE!!!" tidbit.
