My reading was that that was hinted at from the first film, and I liked the idea (followed through in TLJ) of "anyone can be force sensitive"

Ayrt

The problem is that Finn's force sensitivity being the reason he (and Jannah & co) defects opens up a rotten can of worms in regards to the force. All of the First Order stormtroopers were (1) kidnapped as babies, (2) brainwashed, and (3) re-brainwashed if their conditioning wears off (as seen in the Resistance TV show). That means that despite the fact that all of the FO stormtroopers have no agency, it's fine if you kill them because...? They're stormtroopers?

The force sensitive ones are the only stormtroopers worth saving and the only ones the force is interested in saving. It makes the force incredibly cruel.
