I may be misremembering the show, as it's been a long time since I've watched it, but out of all the 'character likes x-thing a lot' writing you see in fandoms Vash's was at least supported by the canon because he really does love donuts that much? But as I said: I could be remembering that incorrectly.

what you're probably remembering is fanon, half fic half cosplayers. I remember SO MANY Vash cosplayers thinking themselves oh-so-original for walking around wih a box of Krispy Kremes when in fact they were not. It really did take over the Trigun fandom ca. 2005 in the way other fanon still takes over today.

Characters NEVER x-thing a lot, it's always exaggerated by fandom, from a little to overhwelmingly too much.
