I live in a semi-rural area where ticks are a real problem, especially if you have pets that go outdoors. Unless your dog stays indoors all the time or remains in a well-manicured yard, you're going to want regular, effective flea/tick treatment and that stuff generally isn't cheap. Someone posted to the local FB group asking for a cheaper alternative to Seresto collars for their dogs and some people told them the truth: that all effective flea/tick meds tend to cost money, and the cheap ones don't work. But if you don't want an infestation or Lyme disease (also an issue here) then you bite the bullet and accept that it's one of the many costs of responsible pet ownership.

And then there were the kooky granola moms who were all, "I use essential oils!" and "I use cinnamon sticks and diatomaceous earth!" (The essential oil MLM ladies pop up EVERYWHERE touting essential oils as a remedy for EVERYTHING, I swear to god.) Just buy the damn meds, Debra.

Buy the meds for sure! Believe it or not, there are worse things than Lyme disease that you can get from ticks. Trust me, you don’t want alpha gal syndrome.

I am pretty limited where I can go during tick season but we keep the yard well maintained so I can at least go out for short bursts. But I’m extremely sensitive to heat thanks to ticks so it’s only for really short bursts. I have all my footwear (socks, too) treated with permethrin and last year we got tick tubes. I thought it was some bogus woo thing like essential oils but they do actually work. The dogs get thoroughly checked before they’re allowed in after walks or if they’ve been in the backyard. They’re on NexGard but that will only kill what bites them. They can still carry ticks inside so each undergoes an extreme check.

My work shifts feature long periods of waiting around doing nothing, so I hate that FS always seems to have boring secrets on the weekends. They are the two days of the week that my other online spaces don't update at all, so when FS doesn't have much engagement in its secrets I get bored.

Off the leash dogs.

(Anonymous) 2024-03-09 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Another dog related vent: people who let their dogs off the leash in a public area, seriously, fuck you guys. I'm so tired of irresponsible pet owners. If your dog isn't directly under your control at all times when you're in public, you're being a dick. It doesn't matter how "friendly" your dog is. Not everyone wants to be approached by a dog, and not every dog welcomes being approached by your dog, friendly or not. If you love your dog, you'll protect it - by keeping it leashed and under your control unless it's in a fenced in yard. If you want off the leash time, take your damn dog to the dog park.

And also, pick up your dog's crap and dispose of it properly, you fucking heathens. This includes you cretins who bag it up and then leave it in random spots in peoples' yards, the sidewalk, etc. etc.

Alllllll of this! Every last syllable. Before we had a fence, my partner took our dog out back on the leash to go to the bathroom and he was attacked midshit by two neighbor dogs :(

THANK YOU.

I love dogs, but I don't like being chased by an unfamiliar dog when I'm on a walk or having a strange dog approach my dog while I'm walking him. My dog is "nice" too, but he's little, and if something sets them off and my dog gets hurt, I will be VERY upset.

We have a leash law here but there are people on facebook every day with dogs that "got out" somehow and of course they're never wearing a freaking collar with a name and number on it.

cosigned. I don't know what goes through people's minds, but serial offenders ought to be fined and banned from owning dogs.

I grind my teeth in my sleep. This makes my gums bleed at random times. I woke up this morning with a clot the size of my thumbnail in my mouth due to this, it was sooooooo gross. I need a mouth guard. Its going to cost me. Sigh.

The place where my mother had her eye surgeries done did not treat her well. The first eye went okay. But with the second eye they did not give her enough anesthesia, and she was in so much pain. And then when they had to go back into that eye, they overcompensated and gave her too much anesthesia. And then they rushed her out when she really wasn't ready to leave. Thankfully she's okay now. But I'm really pissed at them.

When I transferred to my current job, there was a tiny public-inaccessible side patio where broken chairs, peed-on cushions, and other "we'll fix it/have room in the dumpster someday" debris went to moulder and die.

I run a garden swap for work. I got permission to put plants out there and started turning it into a still junky but better than rusty garbage dump garden, using old plastic totes for planters and propagating cuttings and seeds from the swaps.

Our actual paid landscapers just got cleaning it up added to their workload, so they tore up and threw out all the alpine strawberries, violets, and wildflowers I'd been growing in cracks in the pavement.

They also keep ripping up the tomatoes and butterfly milkweed that volunteer in the rest of the landscaping, because half-dead iceberg roses that smell of nothing are all any public park needs, right?

Grr. Feeling very (asexual, dumpy, and middle-aged) Poison Ivy rn.

God I fucking hate these goddamn idiots upstairs. Yes, I know that as a resident, you have the right to have people over, but when you're generally fucking loud and obnoxious with zero concept of neighbors who have to HEAR YOUR SHIT, I feel like you haven't earned the right to have parties with people who are even louder than you are, CONSTANTLY BANGING SHIT AND SHOUTING, AND WHAT IS UP WITH ALL THAT HORSE LAUGHING. I'd let it slide if they weren't so fucking annoying with all their stomping and blasting their sound systems at any hour of the day the rest of the time. Seriously. Have some goddamn awareness, dipshits.

I hesitate to report them unless it gets too bad for several reasons. One, I kind of feel like I get loud too so I don't really have a leg to stand on. Two, I don't want to report idiots who don't know how loud their footsteps are. And three, the last time I lodged a complaint about a loud neighbor, the parent beat the shit out of their kid for six months and I had to call CPS (pointless as that was).

And we spring forward tomorrow, so I'll probably get even less sleep than usual. Ugh.

The remainder of my life will be low-income and in not so great living conditions. I'm afraid and suicidal. I do not have savings or Social Security coming to me. I have zero friends or relatives that will take me in or help me. Welfare and Social Services are full of crap. I'll probably kill myself in the near future.

I've seen drunk people hiccupping in cartoons all my life. I thought it was a reference to some old movie. But tonight I got to see a friend get drunk hiccups. Hilarious! Fun to find out that's real.

Nothing like finding out that your router is having issues and that the solution may be a firmware upgrade (or reinstall)... which you cannot do because you cannot get online due to the malfuncitoning router.

This was supposed to go in the vent thread. Whoops.

Anyway, I was able to get the downloads via a local library terminal, though I probably could have plugged my computer straight into the modem instead-- on the flipside, getting the download elsewhere meant that I had it if my modem was also having problems...
