(Anonymous) 2024-03-10 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)That's been my biggest issue tbh, not the outright 'I tried but didn't like it' that's fair, but there are so many who clearly didn't watch it but are acting like they did because I've seen 'X doesn't even do Y!!!' type posts when... they did and it happened.
Also the crit is starting to turn from 'I just don't like this and think it's bad' to 'I think it's bad but also if you like this thing I think is bad then YOU are a bad person' and that's what's really fucking me off now.

(Anonymous) 2024-03-10 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)Ohhh yeah. Of course people are allowed to like or dislike something, but I expect them to watch it first and I was coming across these long-ass posts just lambasting the show... And the people who wrote them hadn't seen even a second of it. Like, hate it if you want, you have every right, but you need to know what you're talking about and at least sit down for the episodes before you decide to hate it, you know?
I wish people could just be more chill overall, really.

(Anonymous) 2024-03-11 11:36 am (UTC)(link)And sure, this is just a TV show, but it's indicative of a larger problem where a kind of willful ignorance is considered to be virtuous. Don't fact check; don't search for primary sources; don't watch or read something yourself in order to form your own opinion on it. Repeat what you've heard from the tastemakers in your group, and don't dare stray, or you're Bad.

(Anonymous) 2024-03-10 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)I'm mostly on tumblr and it's really, really hard to avoid people throwing their negativity everywhere. Like people can hate it, that's fair, but I want to see gifsets and also read some meta about the things it does do well and it's so hard to find because the people ragging on it are TAGGING the show with their hate and it's tiring.

(Anonymous) 2024-03-11 02:32 pm (UTC)(link)a lot of the fans I know have been saying "the cast has great chemistry and the changes make sense, but the writing is clunky"
I'm not going to watch it because my tolerance for mediocre writing is very low even when not comparing to a beloved original, but I'm glad for the people who are enjoying it

(Anonymous) 2024-03-10 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)Thank you for making my secret secret-maker! I like the pic choice and how you've placed the text. :)

(Anonymous) 2024-03-10 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)ATLA LA wasn't good, but it wasn't bad either. It's okay, with some highlights (the bending and fight choreography looked amazing!) and some lowlights (the dialogue).
The acting I thought went from good (Zuko: the only character who consistently got the intended emotional response from me) to fine. Like, with better dialogue some of the weaker acting could have been smoothed out, but the script didn't give the actors any breaks. The dialogue was so unnatural at times.
I watched the whole thing, but only one episode actually managed to make me want to watch the next episode (the one where Uncle Iroh gives himself up in the earth kingdom city). The rest I kind of had to force myself through, which was disappointing.
But there where enough things I liked about the story that I'll probably give the cartoon another go.

(Anonymous) 2024-03-10 09:57 pm (UTC)(link)Yeah the dialogue when they weren't lifting lines from the show was definitely some of the weaker areas. Some of it worked, some of it didn't but I'd like to give it the chance to improve on that front because to me there is a decent show hiding under some of the clunky parts, it just needs to let those parts shine.
The cartoon is definitely good! Worth a watch for sure if you have the time.

(Anonymous) 2024-03-10 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)If they are original lines I really question what the writers were doing. I read somewhere that there were extensive rewrites; maybe some scenes belonged to scrapped versions of the show were they would have fit better.

(Anonymous) 2024-03-10 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)it's fine. just fine. the visuals are perfect and amazing, but the story wavers between passably ok and infuriatingly dumb choices, plus too compressed for time as OP said. when you're banking on an existing fanbase that has wanted this for how many years, "fine" is not good enough. fine is enough for people not invested in the original, but those aren't the people who are going to keep logging into Netflix for more. the fanbase is where your sustaining money is, and if it's merely "fine," it's forgetable. at least if it sucked there'd be hate-watchers bringing in more clicks, but forgetable = less eyes on it.

(Anonymous) 2024-03-10 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)the fact that it is iffy in places just gives those types actual fuel to their fire but at the same time they ignore the good things it does do because admitting that it's not completely awful isn't what they wanted to do in the first place.
i'm near enough the same as you: it's got it bad parts, but it has some good as well and hopefully the future seasons it now has can improve on the iffy bits and i'll let it have that chance.

(Anonymous) 2024-03-10 10:04 pm (UTC)(link)You might be right sadly, some fans can't even try to enjoy an adaptation. But even then I'm not claiming it's a perfect show: flawed but still enjoyable is where I sit and I don't think that's a bad thing? Honestly my main issue is that they've crammed a 24 ep story into 8 eps which in my opinion is far too little. They need 10-12 at a minimum I think.
I made the comment before the news of extra seasons came out but I'm happy to hear it has been! I do hope they can improve on the decent things that are there and pace things better.

(Anonymous) 2024-03-11 02:36 pm (UTC)(link)so much love obviously went into the netflix show but not enough fucking drafts of the script and that's a shame

(Anonymous) 2024-03-10 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)I really think people have forgotten how bad the movie was on absolutely every level.

(Anonymous) 2024-03-10 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)Yup. I do have things that I thought could be better and choices I think didn't work so well, but it's otherwise fine and I had fun. Which is what I was hoping for.
The movie wasn't even bad to the point of being funny it actually just missed the mark on the setting, while this show gets that but flubs a few things because they had to cram so much into an 8 ep run-time.

(Anonymous) 2024-03-10 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)It's like M. Night figured that anyone who watched the movie already liked the characters and the setting, so he didn't have to do anything to make them likeable.

(Anonymous) 2024-03-11 12:18 am (UTC)(link)I think the show had some bright spots -- some rally good new scenes with Zuko and Irok especially, and actually I think the cast as a whole was very strong even though the material they were given often let them down -- but it also had some pretty big issues too, specially with the writing and characterization. My biggest complaints are I feel like the cartoon show intended for children was more willing to have flawed characters and nuanced dialogue than the supposedly 'adult' live action. The show just felt so afraid to give anybody any traits that could possibly be seen in a negative light (Katara gets absolutely destroyed by this, she's so unbearably passive in the live action). The show also keeps insisting on having everyone state their feelings constantly, like they assume the audience won't be able to infer things and need it spelled out. The Blue Spirit section is the best illustration of this, in the cartoon we get just the one line of Aang asking Zuko if they could have been friends and the show conveys all it needs in just that one moment. The live action feels the need to add like five minutes of dialogue leading up to the friends line, as if the audience won't understand the implications without everything painstakingly spelled out.

(Anonymous) 2024-03-11 04:43 pm (UTC)(link)I've seen! I'm glad and hope that they can improve on the things that worked in the show and just give the scripts a better once-over.
