(Anonymous) 2024-03-13 09:15 pm (UTC)(link)I say this as someone who was never really IN the Supernatural fandom back in the 2010s on Tumblr, but from what I gathered and what I had remembered when it happened; the story is partly based on what happened at a Supernatural panel where someone had asked about Dean being Bi and it was not handled well.
So I guess sort-of based on that in the first half and the rest is the fangirl in question helping the tv show to manage a 'PR disaster' from the panel. Although I don't know if it was suppose to be a self-insert.
It's not really a RPF, BUT in the story the fangirl is a known fanfic writer so some of the chapters are fics of the show - and the other fics shown in the remaining parts of the story are RPF. What's worse is one of the actors (who alternates POV with the fangirl in every other chapter) decides to read this teenager's fics and reads a bunch of them. Weirdly that alone wouldn't have been so bad, except this fangirl is still actively writing and posting RPF based on the things the actor himself had told her as well as the last 'fic' in the story writing his Dad as a abusive and going into graphic territory - like I know its fictional, but I barely survived reading that part. How hard is it to just not wrte AND post fics for a week. God at least wait til after the conventions are over.
Oh and that's on top of the fangirl actually hacking into the script writer's twitter account and threatening to post an embarrassing photo if he doesn't make her ship cannon.
I would say that aside from the over-whelming amount of cringe as in 'Oh no why would you do that?!' kind of cringe; there were parts that probably would have made a better story had it been handled way better than it was.
I actually did like the meet cute side story where the fangirl meets another girl and the parts where the fangirl reflects on how shipping guys felt more comfortable then thinking too much on her own sexuality (more likely due to the fact that it hit a bit close to home when closeted teen me did the same thing lol) - but the 'conflict' between them being that the girl she meets hides that she's into fandom from her friends, whereas fangirl is still working out her own sexuality is a slightly dumb mess.
I guess I didn't mind reading parts of it, but over-all yeah it was as bad as people had warned about it in reviews for that book. I probably would not have read it if I wasn't currently trying to find stories based on characters being into fandoms, and like I said I was curious about it so at least I don't have to wonder about it any more.
(sorry for the long reply, this book did make me think a lot afterwards so I feel like I could rant about it for ages lol).
