Kids still want Star Wars and Marvel stuff (but only Iron Man, Spiderman, and Captain America). The rest of Disney’s merch doesn’t sell well at all for any age group. One of the news sites did an article about Christmas shopping and how undesirable Disney stuff was. They’re far from dead but it’s no secret they’re hurting. OP is incorrect that they can put out flop after flop. Their parks are their big money maker these days and that’s managed (and funded/tallied) separately from the production studio side.

NA

I agree with you about the parks, but Disney World is facing something that is going to eat heavily into park attendance there in the next couple of years. Universal is opening up an entire new park, Epic Universe, and hotel at their resort complex in 2025, and that will draw a lot of people away from Disney World. Also, Disney parks fans are increasingly unhappy about the parks themselves, at least in the US. The cost is increasingly high, and people aren't getting as much as they used to for their money.

DA also, the Paris park is a broken down money sink.

It was int he nineties, things have changed a bit since the Simpsons did that gag. It is very crowded these days, 2020-2022 exempted of course.

It only opened in the nineties so it wasn't broken down back then, no. For the most part it has been hemorrhaging money and yes, it is crowded (outside of the winter months where it's pretty dead for a Disney park) the upkeep and renovations are sucking away a lot of the money it makes. It only really started to make a profit after the Disney company took actual ownership a few years ago. But I've been there in 2019 and while it likely has been renovated during Covid, it was looking pretty damn rough back then.

Ehh, I don't know if a new Universal park will be that much of a threat to DW. Disney World already has multiple rival parks around and has always managed to stay on top.

I was working for a ticket retailer for awhile; even when the Harry Potter area opened and we saw a significant spike in Universal sales, Disney World tickets still sold as well as ever. The Disney fanbase is pretty loyal and the reputation of the parks is solid.

Though I have to add that we sold to an international market. The Disney parks might have a worse reputation in the states. But in our market, a lot of people planned trips to the US specifically to go to DW and then we tried to upsell tickets for Universal/SeaWorld/etc., rather than the other way around.
