This and Lonesome Dove show up in so many book recs and I'm honestly always baffled by it. But then people come back and are all "okay I doubted but they were right, book was amazing" and so then I start to doubt and wonder if I should read them. But I haven't. ...yet.

It's been a while, but I've read Lonesome Dove and I can see why people get pulled into it. Caveat - it's an older book, so I don't think it's very progressive about racism, sexism, etc. but cannot remember the specifics. But it's a very detailed world, and the characters are also very fleshed out. I can see why readers might get lost in that level of world building. I didn't like the sequel, though.

Yeah thats what I've heard, that the world and characters are so fleshed out that people just fall in love with it.
