I feel this. I mean, I mostly like Christmas. Love the music, the decorations, the whole holiday. But the movies, not so much. Way too sappy for the most part and not particularly great. But I love a Christmas horror movie.

Time to recommend Thankskilling and Thankskilling 3. Hands down my favourite holiday movies. But on the serious side of things, the original Black Christmas still holds up very well.

This and Lonesome Dove show up in so many book recs and I'm honestly always baffled by it. But then people come back and are all "okay I doubted but they were right, book was amazing" and so then I start to doubt and wonder if I should read them. But I haven't. ...yet.

As someone who has lived in Japan, racism towards Japanese in foreign media is largely unnoticed or forgiven as a minor flaw. Unlike people of Japanese descent living in other countries, Japanese in Japan haven't lived as a marginalized group. Negative racism like the old stereotyping of the 20th century is seen as something to laugh at because it's Look at those stupid foreigners making idiots of themselves by thinking we look and talk like that. Fetishistic orientalism is like, Hey, they think we're cool! So what if they get a few things wrong? (And if it's historical they may also not even notice some inaccuracies, like any non-history expert may not.)

I dunno. I read Shogun when the original mini-series came out (1980, so i was 13) and I really liked it. I had no interest before that in Japanese anything, so it wasn't like I was a budding weeaboo or something.

I've re-read it since then, and while the politics of it all (especially from the POV of the non-Japanese characters) gets a bit long-winded and dull, I still enjoyed it.

So, you know - give it a shot, maybe? Who knows.

If you bounced off it hard, don't torture yourself going through it again! Read something you have a good chance of liking instead.

I’ve read it a few times but never with the expectation that it would pass hardcore 21st century ideals of sensitivity. That’s actually one of the reasons I have no interest in the remake. The book’s deviations, embellishments, and outright fiction of real events make sense for the time it’s set. The remake’s changes do not.

I bounced hard off the book too, but I re-read it while I was sick some years back and all the "they're barbarians!!!" race fetishy stuff gets turned on its head pretty fast: the Europeans see the Japanese as weird horrible torturers, the Japanese see the Europeans as weird dirty invaders. A lot of learning goes on from the main POV European character in particular (who has to get over his prejudices and ignorance), and the Tokugawa Ieyasu stand-in is a truly fantastic character.

I loved the book.

I was 13 or 14 when I first read it, but I haven't read it in probably 20 years or so, at least. I've been thinking about picking it up again since I started watching this version of the show.

I don't remember much from reading the books ages ago, but I get the sentiment - it really sucks to see a woman basically forced into a marriage, and then be resented for it. Like, let her earn that resentment first at the very least.

Yeah I wouldn't have noticed anything either. And tbf that examples that were "super obvious" that I saw were incredibly zoomed in tidbits that I think any normal person looking would glance over.
