I think it's important to remember that what seems racist or fetishistic is somewhat culturally constructed, and may not seem that way elsewhere (and that of course goes in the other direction, as well: something that seems perfectly fine or appropriately sensitive in one culture may seem quite offensive from the perspective of another).
