I always thought it was a fairly well established term in fandom? Along with "lemon". At least, it was common years ago when I was more active, dunno what the whippersnappers call it now.

Smut literally means "a smudge of soot", or "a black, dirty mark", so more broadly it means dirt/dirtiness; I guess maybe that's a bit better than the usual connotations of the worth of pigs...?
