I recently had a fandom friend die. I'm not sure about any of the details, But it was completely unexpected, and came as a complete shock to me. I didn't even find out until about a month later. This wasn't just someone who I lurked on the page of for the fanworks, and to get comments from. This was someone I actually cared about as a friend outside of fandom (Even though I only met her in person once) and felt I could actually talk to about personal issues.

Sorry if I rambled a bit off topic, but whether the people your "fandom friends" are simply fans of your work, or people who can actually be considered friends (even just online) who you happen to share fandom with as well, they should know the truth. I would not have wanted to be kept in the dark much longer about my friend's death, and I don't think your friends should be left unknowing, either.
