My best friend was in a comparable (though definitely not identical) situation recently, and going off what I learned from her about loss and people who are separate from the more personal aspects (though still significant) parts of your life, I might understand why you wouldn't want to tell -- if you think your telling would remove an atmosphere of normality and lightheartedness that you can find in fandom then I could see why you wouldn't want to tell, but if it's because you think that people don't care so you might as well not bother... Going purely off personal feelings about the people I encounter in fandom, I really doubt that is the case. But as for your question about which is better, it is really hard to say. Is it even a question of 'better' or is it a question of which impression you wish to leave?
