Sure, he's feminine and flamboyant, but I never really saw him as gay. I wouldn't disbelieve it if he was, but a straight guy is fine, too.

I pin this on watching too much anime with ~*FABULOUS*~ characters. Just because someone's not classically masculine doesn't mean they're gay.

In real life, sure. I have absolutely no problem with randomly flamboyant straight guys. But I agree with the OP that Ryan was coded as gay, using most of the traditional methods movies have used for decades to indicate homosexuality. The fashion sense, interest in drama and dancing, close relationship with his female relatives - all of those things have long been used in film as a nudge to indicate, "Yeah, he's gay," without saying so in words.

While yeah, that's true and agree to an extent, I also am kinda glad that they didn't follow up on that stereotype. Do we really need more fodder for that?

There aren't enough characters with these traits which identify themselves as straight, and it's not like it's a definate trait of homosexuality, which a lot of people unfortunately seem to generalize. I'd rather we break that stereotype than feed it.

That said, I wouldn't have minded he were gay.

I see where you're coming from.

However, my biggest issue with that interpretation is that we must first buy into the (somewhat close-minded) idea in which fashion sense, interest in drama and dancing, and close relationship with female relatives somehow speak towards his homosexuality. For all we know, Disney may have intended Ryan's character not to perpetuate the heteronormative social constructs but, rather, to challenge the bounds of traditional masculinity in straight men. (Sorry, couldn't help but play Devil's Advocate there. ;) )

I got a bit off-topic there, but the main thing is that while I can recognize the social utility of having "token" gay guys in popular media in order to help effect social change, perceived quotas and all the ills of tokenism offend me at some sort of basic level. Speaking for myself, I might have been more annoyed if Ryan actually was canon gay. *shrug*

Bah, you said everything I was thinking before I even got here! Agree v v much, I definitely prefer him as just a camp/FABULOUS/sparkly straight guy than becoming a token gay/perpetuating media stereotypes.

Can I have an in-depth trope analysis of all the HSM characters now please?

I thought the same.
I mean, it would've been cool if he was gay, but that wasn't my first thought. I just thought he spent a lot of time with his sister (she's such a control freak, I wouldn't be surprised if she picked out his clothing).

But, I don't know. It's "High School Musical," it's not like it reflects real life by any stretch of the imagination. ;)
