If it makes you feel better, Ryan is gay (and crushing on Troy) in the touring stage-musical.

For real? How does that even work? Why would Disney give him a girlfriend in #3 but make him gay in their tour? I am confused and intrigued!

(Anonymous) 2009-08-01 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)
It's an american mainstream series...what did you expect?

(Anonymous) 2009-08-01 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Not that I don't agree with you about the film, but if you didn't know gay and lesbian relationships could exist until you were in the seventh grade, you may want to shift a little bit of that blame onto your parents and community as well. Disney creates very influential media, but at the end of the day it's not Disney's job to raise you.

^ so very much this.

[identity profile] snackbreak.livejournal.com 2009-08-02 03:16 am (UTC)(link)
That's true, but when you've got so many kids being raised in homophobic households, there's going to be a lot of FAIL in that area unfortunately :C

(Anonymous) 2009-08-02 07:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd never really encountered anything about LGBT relationships until I watched Doctor Who when I was twelve and encountered Captain Jack. I have this rambling journal entry where I'm basically going 'but he's a guy! Guys don't like other guys, and he likes Rose as well, couldn't he even pick one or the other?' for like a page and a half.

Guess who now identifies as bisexual? *laughs*

To be fair to my mother I was kept relatively in the dark about straight relationships as well.

(Anonymous) 2009-08-01 09:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I know what you mean. I didn't even like HSM and knew they would never out him but when they forced a girl on him in the third I was pretty disappointed too. And I KNOW there was no way in hell they'd make him gay but could they at least have left him single. Well if he had been outed gay I'd probably liked HSM a bit so it's just as well.

(Anonymous) 2009-08-01 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
A lot of American parents don't want their children to learn about gays before they reach puberty (because obviously accepting homosexuality at a young age will turn them into sexual deviants). You're insane if you thought there was a chance of a gay character in a very popular Disney movie series.

[identity profile] mimes.livejournal.com 2009-08-01 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Honestly, I can't blame them for not doing it. It's a shame, yeah, but can you imagine the controversy?

Disney's job isn't to teach you about life, it's to make money. There's no way they're going to make him gay while knowing that some fundies won't let their kid watch the movie/buy the merch because of its ~evil message~

[identity profile] rainbow-cnxn.livejournal.com 2009-08-01 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)
*shrug*

Sure, he's feminine and flamboyant, but I never really saw him as gay. I wouldn't disbelieve it if he was, but a straight guy is fine, too.

I pin this on watching too much anime with ~*FABULOUS*~ characters. Just because someone's not classically masculine doesn't mean they're gay.

[identity profile] xenafox.livejournal.com 2009-08-01 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)
This.

[identity profile] allyndra.livejournal.com 2009-08-01 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
In real life, sure. I have absolutely no problem with randomly flamboyant straight guys. But I agree with the OP that Ryan was coded as gay, using most of the traditional methods movies have used for decades to indicate homosexuality. The fashion sense, interest in drama and dancing, close relationship with his female relatives - all of those things have long been used in film as a nudge to indicate, "Yeah, he's gay," without saying so in words.

I thought the same.
I mean, it would've been cool if he was gay, but that wasn't my first thought. I just thought he spent a lot of time with his sister (she's such a control freak, I wouldn't be surprised if she picked out his clothing).

But, I don't know. It's "High School Musical," it's not like it reflects real life by any stretch of the imagination. ;)

totally agree with everything about that.
But Disney is Disney and only time will see what happens =/

Until then - to the fandom!

[identity profile] majutsukai.livejournal.com 2009-08-01 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I've given up hope at this point that Disney will ever do anything like this. Because... it's Disney.

:/

I'm not even particularly a fan of them, but seriously. The day we get a Disney film with a gay couple in it is the day I die happy.

Yep, bottom line is Disney doesn't do shit for themes, they do it for $$$ and they didn't want to deal with the possibility of fundie parents flipping out. Disney doesn't exactly have the most tolerant history, as you've obviously noticed, and money is always the reason.

It's sad, but it's just as much society's fault as Disney's.

[identity profile] lumati.livejournal.com 2009-08-02 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
I never thought of Ryan as gay. I did briefly consider shipping him with his sister though.

I haven't actually seen the third movie so who exactly do they pair him up with? Am I allowed to hope it's that girl who likes to dance? Because somehow I'd be all over that.

[identity profile] docsaico.livejournal.com 2009-08-02 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
Did you ever see "Ellen" (Ellen DeGeneres' show from the '90s)? It was on Disney originally, but when Ellen came out as a plot line in the show, they dropped her show and she had to actually move to another channel.

Everything they do, they do for money.

I was never hoping for it because, y'know, it's Disney, but I admit I was disappointed when they suddenly were all, "lol here have a prom date deus ex machina" in the third movie. I was like, "Really now? Gee, how perfect everyone's been paired up."

But yeah. Bottom line, it's Disney.

This is why you should read books.

[identity profile] withoutshape.livejournal.com 2009-08-02 04:19 am (UTC)(link)
Unfortunately, I've given up hope of seeing any mainstream TV show or movie aimed for children to include an openly gay couple or even a gay character. Not anytime soon. Kinda hurts, but our society just sucks a whole fucking lot that way.

[identity profile] carnillvious.livejournal.com 2009-08-02 11:50 am (UTC)(link)
Well... I mean you know the overprotective parents would stop allowing their kids to watch I bet. :[ I am DEFINITELY NOT excusing it, but Disney is greedy and wants their profits. By not making him gay, Disney is not getting rid of fans because you know disgruntled fans will still watch. But, if they made a character gay, the news would spread like wildfire, overprotective parents, etc.
It does suck though, anon. At least it's hinted at VERY MUCH and that's a start? I hope in their next movie they make a gay character that comes out.

[identity profile] lumbergh.livejournal.com 2009-08-02 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Not like I'm going to say anything that hasn't been said here, but... it IS Disney. Remember, this is the same company whose movies only had villains with darker skin than the protagonists. They're not exactly pioneers against discrimination.
