Argh, this.

It bothers me so much when people get all interested in Japan JUST because of anime. Granted, I like some anime (mostly I like to game), but I love Japan because I find their culture interesting. I'm learning the language because I find it beautiful. I want to study abroad over there so I can get a first-hand experience about what it's like.

In my Japanese class, we started out with twenty-five people. At the end of first semester, we had ten people, because the other fifteen students had to drop because they were only interested because they were anime fans and weren't prepared for the challenge of learning the actual language. They just didn't have the dedication because they were in it for the wrong reasons.

Seriously. I take Japanese at a pretty big state university. First year Japanese has four sections, around 20 students each, for a total of about 80 students taking first year Japanese. Second year only has two sections - it goes down to 40 students because people drop it or fail miserably! And well, they're mostly anime fans who expect that Japanese will come to them with a snap.

(Some girl kept insisting that the -ん form was 'odd' because she 'hadn't heard it in anime.' Yeah, keep being classy.)
