Thank you. I wish more people believed me when I say, "Anime and manga isn't real Japanese in culture nor how they talk." -.-

Yup. After seeing a show about gay travel in Japan on Logo, I know I wouldn't want to live there.

(Anonymous) 2009-08-01 08:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Japan is also pretty xenophobic. Sure they like tourism, but there are places that have signs that say "Japanese only", "No foreighners", or "Foreigners must have Japanese escorts"

Strange enough, the Japanese have been known to do this very same thing only with Europe. It's called "The Paris Syndrome" (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/6197921.stm).

I guess the lesson learned here is that books, movies and television lie. Never trust them.

I have a degree in East Asian Studies with a concentration on Japanese language and literature and you're very correct in your observations to your friend, anon. So many of my fellow classmates took Japanese classes in university because they thought that they would be able to translate YuGiOh in full by the end of term. A very dear friend of mine went on an exchange to Japan and she said to me "I really hope that my host parents are manga editors!".

[identity profile] mimes.livejournal.com 2009-08-01 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I hope your friend eventually learns better pretty damn soon, and not while wearing a skirt on Japanese public transit or something.

What are you talking about, Japan is utopia and no one there can do no wrong.

I just find it amazing and appalling that people can stereotype people so easily like that.

[identity profile] melengro.livejournal.com 2009-08-01 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)

Agreed. What also irritates me is when the really hyper Japanophiles constantly bother anyone who looks remotely Asian about Japan/anime/etc.. It's incredibly rude to assume that's all Japan is about (not to mention these tards usually bother someone who ends up being Chinese).

I totally understand you. I've always loved the culture and the language, so I'm double majoring in it and international business...and I do what to work there in our Embassies
But I'm so sick of all the "eh you must like anime" and "kamikaze" conversations people want to have when i tell them that. Like thats all there is to Japan.
Even the other students in my japanese classes are like that. I think theres only 1 or 2 who arent there because of anime alone

[identity profile] teh-faolkitty.livejournal.com 2009-08-01 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
This secret is something I've seen espoused by a number of people and a number of other secrets on FS. What I'm more curious about is, I've always had a deep and abiding interest in Japan, since long before I had an interest in anime or manga or started playing Final Fantasy. I'm fascinated by the culture and the day to day lives of the people who live there, but where does one actually start to find accurate, honest information about Japan and contemporary Japanese society, which is where my interest mainly lies. Random googling? Guide books? Are there books in English which actually discuss these topics and if so, where does one look for them?

I want to know what Japan is really like and I would love to visit some day, far, faaaar in the future, but where does one start?

oooooh, she is in for one huge culture shock.

For people like that in the US, I often mention that I'm in Australia and we don't have roos and koalas in the backyard. People often seem pretty surprised that Australia is not like they have been lead to believe, and then you can ask why they think Japan would be any different.

(Anonymous) 2009-08-02 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
One one hand, of course you're right. On the other - because I always like to play the devil's advocate - it's also not without merit to use the products of culture as a tool of understanding the people. Personally, I tend to go for live action movies - and sure, I know that not every Japanese male behaves like (any given incarnation of) Toshiro Mifune and Japanese boys' highschools don't look like Suzuran High. But the very existence of those movies is an indicator of what the culture is like.

Same goes for manga and anime. Half the things in, say, 'Ichi the Killer' aren't even physically possible. But the existence of this manga doesn't mean that Japanese yakuza are capable of feats disregarding the basics of human anatomy. What it does mean, though, is that there is something in the culture which nurtures such a form of artistic expression and something in the people which makes them an appreciative audience.

Wow, talk about rambling and random examples. Please excuse me, I should actually be working and am trying very hard not to.

Heh, captcha is "self extract". I'll just extract myself from this long-winded tirade, then.

tl;dr You're right, but not 100%.

Non-Japanese who go to Japan expecting it to be like anime/J-Pop world get what they deserve. I knew what I was in for going in (my family was stationed in Tokyo when I was a kid), and it was *still* like stepping onto the surface of Mars. It took some time (and my roomies spiking my tea with Nikka Whisky) for the culture shock to fade.

Likewise, Japanese going to America have an equally unrealistic view. Like my coworker who said he was going to greet his new American friends with a "one-finger salute." Yeah, good luck with that.

(Anonymous) 2009-08-02 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
I have three different friends who want me to come with them to Japan on our college gap year. I love them but I know that they don't understand the whole anime=/=real life Japan thing either.

D:

[identity profile] snowdevil-crow.livejournal.com 2009-08-02 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
What, you mean it's an actual country with actual people, not just a fantasy land that comic books and cartoons come out of? What is this?

[identity profile] nanei.livejournal.com 2009-08-02 02:46 am (UTC)(link)
I don't get the blind love people have for japan. The people there are all kinds of crazy and the culture is mindbogglingly different, to use anime and manga, jpop or whatever as a reference is pretty foolish. I love watching stuff and I like the culture enough, but I am very aware of its many many flaws - like any other country.

Liked this secret anon =D

[identity profile] withoutshape.livejournal.com 2009-08-02 03:50 am (UTC)(link)
... I agree with this secret but I hardly think that "not having a sense of honor and are willing to die for their Emperor" is a flaw. That's like the whole "my country, right or wrong" thing, which I think is bull, only kinda worse because it comes from putting one man on a pedestal instead of the whole country.

/NITPICKING I just didn't get that part

[identity profile] wicked-seraph.livejournal.com 2009-08-02 04:12 am (UTC)(link)
Good God D:

I've always been interested in Japan as a country, regardless of what anime/manga I was into, or how much I was into it. Saying that anime and manga are accurate portrayals of Japan as a whole is like saying that Superman and High School Musical are excellent portrayals of America as a whole. :/

Japan is just as flawed as every other country in the world - I find it fascinating to look into the good, bad, and ugly aspects of different cultures and to see where our differences and similarities intersect.
