More people are interested in this fandom than in Superman fandom, just going by the responses between the two threads. So, why can't we have this?

So you agree just any old hobby is a fandom?

(Anonymous) 2024-03-23 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Pretty much. Whereever two people are gathered to fight over a common interest, there is fandom. Amen.

I think hiking can definitely be thought of us as fandom, since there are big names in it that people become proper fans of, and fans of different big names have fights with one another over them.

Avid hiker and backpacker here and I had no idea there are big names in hiking. Like influencers or something?

Off the top of my head for big historic names, there's Grandma Gatewood and Earl Shaffer. For controversy, Warren Doyle (overzealous thruhike purist) and Wild Card Ninja (kind of...faked a fastest time) come to mind. I should go and refresh myself to give you some more.

I've def heard of Grandma Gatewood but had no idea she had a fandom following! The others, no clue. But I've only recently joined some social media groups for hiking and backpacking, before that it was just something I grew up doing and continued the hobby into adulthood. So I am really ignorant of most popular social aspects of the hobby.
