okay so...I started Kiwami 1 and got to a boss battle I just. CAN NOT. pass. Is there anything stopping me from just going on to the next game? I got like 7 games in a bundle for 30-40 bucks. Can I just keep playing if I don't give a shit about the story ending?

I mean, I have 1300 hours in Stardew Valley alone, those games don't sound excessively long? Also people watch other people play on Youtube.

I started with Yakuza 7, and while it still has reference to previous games, including Kiryu, having a new protagonist DOES let the story stand on its own.

But I felt Yakuza 8 suffered by focusing on Kiryu so intently that it pushed Ichiban away in order to finish the former's story, and from what I hear, his story had BEEN finished in Yakuza 6 (though I do like that he did get a happy ending.) So as an outsider to the greater Yakuza franchise, I can kinda get that. Both games I mentioned are a huge time sink, and I have no clue if it's because they're JRPGs versus what they were previously.

Though I will say, having played Yakuza 7 and 8, I absolutely want to play the previous games in the series, so hey. I'm down for more, regardless of how long they take to beat.

I have not played these games ever, but got super into fics (read: fell in love with) Goro Majima. As a result, I had to rely on the wikis to tell me about these characters and their storylines. I don't recall enough to properly thread the story (outside of what was relevant to Majima, and some additional lower level gangsters), but kudos to anyone who can follow that story while playing!

I feel like social media definitely have a hand in this. Back when I saw the most unhinged stuff in fandom, it was in corners of the internet on fanfics sites pre-AO3 like adultffnet and LJ comms. Then people started posting their fandom related works on more 'open' social platforms that made it easier for any one outside of fandom to find - which then lead to doxxing.
As much as everyone jokes on the HIV Hamilton AU incident, that comes to mind because it was all uncovered because someone decided to link their irl twitter account to their Tumblr - which of course revealed the person's identity. That was an extreme example involving someone who was essentially scamming the fanbase, but I could imagine how people feared their fanworks being found and exposed to people in their personal lives.
I suppose it makes sense if you were in a position to have your hobby exposed, its better for it to be something 'safe' rather than anything that would be uncomfortable to explain to someone like your own parents.

This is the same attitude that my conservative boomer father has, lmfao. Except I'm sure the OP of that tweet is at least 40 years younger than him. I noticed this attitude prop up around 2015 and that was my first thought when I saw it, it's a mix of weird puritanism and consumerism. Be a Good Person by Consuming Good Things.

I went into the film on like the second day of release knowing there was already a weird fandom buzz around him and for a little while was thinking: what is the big deal. Then came that "he's sexually vulnerable" line and it was like getting hit with 2+ decades worth of thousands of fic at once about the evil psychotic character who is pathetic for whoever you ship him with. Oh...suddenly it made sense.

Some of the memes have been very entertaining it has to be said.
