Not always.

For people with allergies, yes. But manmade fibers have a lot of plastic in them that not only make for less breathable fabrics and aren't as long lasting as natural fibers, but also pollute the environment and aren't sustainable in regards to manufacturing.

I don't have allergies to fabrics, so my go-to is merino wool underlayer with a cotton or raw silk top layer. I try to avoid synthetics whenever possible.
