AYRT see this is where you lose me, I don't think being a fan of something makes you part of the fandom. There are shows I'm a fan I but never join the fandom. And I don't think you have to create fanworks to be in fandom, but you have to at least consume them. I don't think fandom is a passive thing and I think it has to go beyond just liking a thing.

So like when someone considers themselves part of the Swifties and follows all the news and buys all the albums but doesn't consume any fanwork, they're not Taylor Swift's fandom?

I wouldn't say so, no. Swifties are fans but not a fandom.

Although they're probably a fandom too. Probably some crossover.

That would be someone in fandom.

Its not the subject its how people are interacting with it. You can be a Taylor Swift fan but not in TS fandom, or you can be a fan and in fandom.
