Doctor's gender is another matter.

Yep, this. But I would've been fine if the actress was a woman but the doctor's gender identity remained male, like using male pronouns etc. it would've been great if he had to struggle with his ingrained entitled male point of view while inhabitation a female presenting body. that'd be both hilarious and a great start for more character development. and yes, even reflections about misogyny in both current and other/future worlds.
while i do think that the master could be gender fluid (but fucking hate it that she calls herself missy or the mistress though, just call yourself the master, it's your name...), i really can't buy that with the doctor.
